If Jim Finks had his way and had convinced Halas not to hire a mentally ill Head Coach, how many Super Bowls would the Bears have won in the 1980s/early 90s?

Walsh
Gibbs
Parcells
Jimmy Johnson

All would've won more. Maybe even Belicheck and Buddy.

The defense continue to remain strong a few years after Ryan left, in fact the Bears defense of 88 led the NFL in both yards and points allowed(3 seasons removed from Ryan and the loss of Marshall). They just continued to bungle the QB position and McMahon couldn't stay healthy.

Historically, you will not win multiple 'ships without a franchise QB..the 2000 Ravens, 2002 Bucs, you can sneak in a Superbowl in on the back of a dominant defense, but tough to repeat/sustain.

We're now labeling Mike Ditka "mentally ill" in 2021? Haha

"Mike Ditka is THE only coach that could only win ONE superbowl with that Bears roster".

Friend of mine said that years ago and it was very true. Finks understood the priority and value of OL and DL. Something that's long been forgotten.

Mike Ditka as a head coach was a fraud. Entertaining as hell, but a pretty crappy head coach.

Number of playoff games the Bears have won after Ditka left 30 years ago? Four.

he was a motivator. With the right crew, it works.

Come on now, that is a bit much.

While I will fully admit he was not the most important piece of that puzzle, he was not a fraud.

It is always funny to hear complaints that someone only won a single championship. Teams go decades without winning one(lol Cubs). I'm not going to get mad at anyone for only winning one.

That wasn't a shot at Ditka, though the 80s Bears should have- at the very least- made it to another Super Bowl.

It was a shot at the Bears organeyezation for failing to be competitive for the vast majority of the time since Ditka was fired.

After 86 he was a fraud and spent most of his time selling products. What did win, one playoff game after the Super Bowl? And only because of ridiculous fog.

That is a fairer criticism. He did go off the rails after 86. But in general and while they were building a winning team he was not fraud.

Maybe Ditka enjoyed being in the limelight a bit too much, but if he had a healthy quarterback or a better one I would bet he would've had a better playoff record post 1986.

That team was absolutely stacked. They should have had one more. Ditka was way more concerned with his own brand by '86.

He's a lot of things...HOF TE for sure and I found his shtick absolutely hilarious and entertaining, but his coaching legacy is vastly overrated.

You guys act as if the rest of the league was a bunch of bums. Niners, Giants, Bills, Broncos and Skins were all loaded..better QBs also.

And in the 80s the Giants and Washington won multiple titles, with multiple quarterbacks.

Jim Finks could have also decided not to wait to the 3rd round hoping Joe Montana would still be there.....

He was already a title winner in Frisco.

And iirc Gibbs won his first game vs the Bears after starting 0-5.

I have an old bears yearbook written by Cooper Rollow. It mentions that Walsh was a candidate for the Bears job before the '78 season. Of course that job went to Neill Armstrong. Did Finks decide to pick Armstrong over Walsh or did Walsh decide not to come to the midwest (there was speculation he did not want to leave the west coast).

Finks was a fine GM but as much as people think Ditka is overrated, I tend to think Finks was a bit overrated. He thoroughly botched the Qb position for about 8 years. Felt he could win with any QB, that he could find the next Joe Kapp. Wasted most of Walter's prime years.

I found an article that said Finks passed over Walsh in 78 for Neill Armstrong...

And like Pace, Finks could never seem to find a QB
