I've asked this question countless times of my smug liberal friends without ever receiving a coherent reply. I'm not playing "gotcha" either. It's a sincere question. Are electric cars better for the planet or are they just empty virtue symbols like COVID masks?

Like I said, it's a sincere question. It seems your answer is "no" with spin. I want electric cars to be good for the environment. I like green energy. I just don't like pretending.

It's not really spin. I don't think electric cars are very good now either. I wouldn't buy one unless it was a hobby car I was driving to and from the supermarket. It's pretty clear they will be the superior option in the next 10 years or so though. The tech is starting to reach the break even point with gas powered cars and they aren't close to finished with improving while the internal combustion engine is pretty close to maxed out.

We have far more options, including cleaner options, on how to power our electric grid than we do with the internal combustion engine. That's why my house doesn't run on an engine in the backyard that I drop 300 gallons of gasoline into so I can post on here.

To answer the OP, depends on where you charge them. My boss has a Tesla. He was reading article that said there is some fairly rural town in Indiana where Teslas are like a third of the cars registered in town. Because of the super charges and that they get their power from coal, the carbon footprint in that town is nearly double what it would be if those Teslas were just regular gas using compact cars.

My wife's boss has a Tesla. We went to dinner up in Milwaukee a few months ago and they asked if I wanted to drive it. Turns out I was unknowingly recruited to be the DD for the ride back. Honestly, I didn't like the way that it drove at all. It's the only electric car I've ever driven. I definitely see things trending the way of the electric car but they still have a lot of work to do on them and they need to go further on a charge. The Tesla I was driving only goes like 200 miles. Anytime they go on a trip they have to pull over like every 3 hours and recharge. What a hassle.

On one of my car forums, there is a group of Tesla owners. Again, I have nothing against them as like I said above, I wouldn't mind an S P100D.

Anyway, one of them was giving us real world feedback on his trip from Chicago to Boston in his Model S giving us the time it took him to make the trek, using the Tesla Supercharging network (which in some cases when not around a major city, was marginally off the interstate...). Of course he was all excited and bragged about getting time to stop, sniff the roses, eat, shop, etc while his car was charging. It took him something like a total of 24 - 26 hours IIRC to make the trip.

Then I chimed in. I had recently done pretty much the reverse trip. Mine was a little longer as I started in Portland, Maine, then back to Chicago (Well Elgin), in my Suburban the year before. My Suburban has a 42 gallon tank. Filling up long enough to fill it twice and including one stop just east of the Indiana/Ohio border on I-80 at 3am as I just couldn't keep my eyes open anymore... I think it did it in around 15 hours.

Basically, I saved roughly 10 hours... A full nights' sleep.

To be honest, it isn't range anxiety with them anymore. It's "replenishment anxiety." Until I can find a recharging station on every corner (or right at the exit of an interstate), and recharge a battery in the same amount of time it takes to fill a tank of gas, we just aren't there yet.

How long does it take to fill up your gas tank on a long trip? By the time you piss and grab more snacks your battery could be fully charged.

That's really the only way it works unless they get the range above 1,000 miles and an overnight charge isn't a deal breaker even on a long road trip.

When we go on road trips and have to stop for gas my wife easily takes 10 minutes peeing for whatever reason and has to look at all the wacky nicknacks at road ranger or whatever weird truck stop we find ourselves at. Never buys anything. But we have to look at all the shot glasses and cb radios.

15min charge times are going to be here very soon, and be the norm. after 200-300 miles of driving, nobody is going to complain about 15 minute break.

And where do the elemental ingredients of these rapid-charging batteries come from, including the costs to mine/refine them and the labor force to perform all the acts to them? How are they treated?

We are likely just shifting our dependance from one set of non-American sources to another, which we may have even less control over. And, we may be simply shifting the carbon footprint to places who don't give a rat's ass about not burning dirt to power the battery plant, or pouring tons of mercury into the creek, or working 8-year olds 18 hours a day.

Just don't be so smug about it or force it down my throat.
