This was one of the worst things ever. They didn't even try to have anything humorous. They gave themselves the Humanitarian Award. I didn't see the ending but it sounds like a perfect end to a terrible show.

The only way to solve this is to get Ricky Gervais or Dave Chapelle.

Why should they change anything? The people who say the NEVER watch somehow always know everything about the ceremony.

First year that I can remember where I didn't watch any of it. Sounds like it was a good choice. I only had seen a handful of the movies and wasn't that interested in the others. I'd like to watch Sound of Metal on Amazon this week, that looks good. My wife and I watched Promising Young Woman yesterday. It was original at least which is more than I can say for most movies that come out. I didn't figure it would win best picture or anything but I think the writer won for screenplay.

Isn't the goal of the show to entertain people so, you know, they actually want to see some of the movies under consideration for awards?

The few minutes of the program I watched struck me as boring and pretentious. I sincerely doubt my opinion is unique, and I'm pretty sure both the television ratings and critical reviews will bear this point out.

It's OK to admit that the show was bad. There's always next year.

They should tank the next few years to stockpile assets to be able to compete with other award shows in the future.

 The ratings are going to be a complete disaster. Good, let them burn like Minneapolis.

As always, didn't watch; straight.

The only rooting interest I would have had is for Promising Young Woman to not win anything. That is amateurish shit in every phase of its production but the message was right, so it was award worthy.

You are lucky. Like MANY of the posters early in this thread, my TV mysteriously stayed tuned to ABC and I was tied to a chair forced to watch the entire thing. What a terrible evening.

This seems to be a bit of a strawman. In general, I enjoy watching The Oscars. The show was poorly done and it's ok to say that. Is it now no longer acceptable to say that something on tv was poorly done?

Watching via DVR is a must...even in "good" years, I make it through the 3-4 hours in about 30-45 minutes.

"Of course the numbers are low, no movies came out this year because theaters were closed so people hadn't seen them!"
"Also, we are barely going to show any clips of the movies. Viewers would care more about knowing that the sound editor guy once worked in a movie theater".

the amount of viewers is no surprise.

i read this about illinois and can only assume that enough voters were convinced that trump was/is a buffoon and regardless of stance on social issues, voted for biden - who is giving us plenty of unwanted 'wokism'.

Quote:
Illinois’ political establishment is far out of touch with the general public on the racial dogma now forced on students from kindergarten through college. Yet a stunning two-thirds of Illinoisans say they don’t speak up, thereby ceding control to an intolerant, extremist minority.

The proof is in a poll released last month that was mostly buried and ignored by the press. It primarily addressed what schools now teach as unquestionable truth: critical race theory, also called anti-racism or wokism.

Illinoisans don’t like it. The American Council of Trustees and Alumni, which commissioned the poll, summarized their findings this way:

A majority  of respondents  favor equipping teachers to develop core skills and competencies over the encouragement of  progressive  political activism.  Illinoisans  also  favor  a curriculum that  focuses  on “American founding principles and . . . documents” over  one that  incorporates  key  tenets of the  New York Times’ 1619  Project.  At  the post secondary level,  strong  majorities  oppose reducing police presence on campus;  support viewpoint diversity; favor a merit-based application process;  and  prioritize  reducing the cost of tuition over expanding  diversity  and equity  programs.

That’s completely at odds with mandates from the state’s politicians and education officials. The Illinois State Board of Education recently approved woke teaching standards with its “Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning Standards” for K-12 education, and the state earlier made “implicit bias” training required by law for Illinois teachers.

In an effort to help speed things up.... maybe presenters should be required to present a minimum of 3 awards before they can leave the stage?

Glenn Close's bit about D.C. go-go music from the eighties and brief dance was funny. But I saw it on the news this morning.

Godfather III was nominated for best picture 30ish years ago. Ick. Wtf?

Also my dad took me to see rain man when my mom was against me seeing it and it came out when we were watching the oscars. I remember very few fights or tension with them and that was one. So stupid in some ways.

97 was a nice year for best picture.

It used to be fun.
