So may backyard is enclosed by hedges. I hate cutting these things. I also wouldn't mind getting a dog. My neighbor to the right has nothing. The left has cyclone fence and the back is enclosed 3/4 vinyl by one house and 1/4 open by the other. My back yards is roughly 40x40x40. What is it going to cost me to have this stuff ripped out and get a fence up? If I go with a fence is vinyl best?

I don't know about vinyl fencing, but we had to have 2 posts repaired. While they were here I asked current price for a new fence....4 ft cedar on a basic 1/4 acre lot is currently $5-6K

Right now, I'd hold off on any fence building. Wood is 3x more expensive right now than what it was a year ago.

install the outside of the fence reversed and facing inward. it's the permanent middle finger to your neighbors.

Last year when we got the new place I put in a split rail fence (think farm fence) with welded wire attached on the inside so dogs and whatever can't get in or out. Looks great because that wire becomes invisible to your eye. Also we used these great cedar timbers from Quebec. About $4K. Just got a new neighbor next to me and he loves the fence and got a quote exactly one year later. $8K. His was going to be a touch bigger not much.

With those vinyl (really PVC) panels or pickets at least all the wood you have to pay for is the posts. Also pretty simple to do yourself if you have that skill.

you are probably looking at 2k in materials for 150' of vinyl privacy fence. double it for labor i'd guess. throw another 500 in for removing the hedges.

I grew up with a 75 foot long wood fence on one side of my house. My dad used to make me help him stain it every other summer. That was awful. I never want to do that again. My sister bought a house that already had a vinvyl fence up. She said its much better than dealing with a wood or metal fence her previous places had.

Yea, other materials I can't comment on, but to be honest, I would expect prices on everything to go up significantly (inflation??) here shortly. So regardless of what you make it out of, it's not the best time to be doing it.

I have a lot that's about 40 feet wide and 130 feet deep. I had my chain link fence ripped out and vinyl fencing installed in the back yard last spring. It cost $8,400, but the contractor I selected was not the lowest bidder. I picked them because they seemed to be more competent than the other contractors I considered. I've been pleased with the finished product thus far.

I did wood a couple years ago and we paid ~$8k for almost 300ft of 6’ fencing. We’d quoted out a trex fence at 18k for comparison.

My neighbor is doing ~50ft this year on two small sections of side yard and are paying...~$8k for the exact same product/style.

I’d recommend waiting until next year and just cutting the hedges for $0 a few more times.

For the price of a 6k fence you could pay $50 twice a year to have your hedge trimmed for the next 60 years.

If you do get a dog get a chain or take him for a walk.

130' of 6' cedar privacy fence and and 30' of 5' fence with openings and two self latching gates is currently $5k.

No. Not even close to comparable if you have dog(s).
Fence is 100% absolutely a better option than a fucking leash.

The chain comment was not entirely serious. But said dog has yet to be acquired so what's the rush to drop big $$? When (or if) it ever is, what is wrong with walking it? Walking is good for both the dog and its human.

As for confining this future dog to the yard, isn't an 'invisible' fence much less costly?

Borrow a pit bull and put it on the chain that aretard mentioned. Those fences would be up before you can say Jack Robinson.

Not only is the price of lumber ridiculous and 3x what it should be. Pvc is getting equally as overpriced.

After bringing this up to my dad he told me he was quoted 7k for a wood fence tear down and Vinyl replacement in the fall. His yard is a bit bigger than mine. Ive been slowly improving the yard since I moved in. The yard was filled with bushes and rock originally. I had the bushes removed and got rid of all the rock myself. Now there is just a twenty foot high tree right in the middle of the yard along with an evergreen in one corner. I seeded everything and it has come in pretty good over the last few years. The hedges look like shit and are different types mixed in. Neither a dog or a fence is an immediate requirement, but a fence is one of the long term things I want to do to improve my property.
