Yeah, I miss Heaven on Seven. Wish they still offered the jugs of gumbo. The best.

Check them out on Facebook.

I bought a half-gallon a couple weekends ago. Still great.

You just have to nonchalantly meet an old white guy in a suburban gas station parking lot and participate in a weird line of people casually picking up items.

You miss the occasional gunfire?

Is it nonstop gunfire now?

I don't know; I haven't used the Morse El stop since I last lived in Illinois eight years ago.

That’s my business model. Except it was a McDonald’s.

It's the Casey's in Eureka, IL.

I don't miss the place as much as I miss family, friends, and past memories.

Glad ur out?

Yes. The winters are bullshit. Today, I hear it's in the 40s. That's fucking stupid.

Some college roommates visited AZ this past weekend. I couldn't believe it when one told me the property taxes on the home he's moving into next month in North Wheaton is about $16,000. The taxes on the house we were at (he and another couple rented off AirBnb) in Fountain HIlls is roughly 1/5 of that. It's got a pool, it's a newer home, and it's 1,000 more square feet.

What do u miss and what do u not miss, and what do u like about ur new locale compared to Chicago?

I don't miss the food as much as other people say. We've fortunate enough to have Portillo's, White Castle, Spinato's/Aurelio's, Rosati's, Lou Malnati's. Of course, fantastic Mexican food. I'm not as close as I'd like to be to some delis I really enjoy in Phoenix, but whatever.

I miss summers the most. I miss seeing kids out and about in the neighborhood playing during the summer. I miss going to Cubs games with Cubs fans and then out to the bars afterwards. I miss summer bbqs. Anything summer.

I like Arizona because I like the West. I think there's something romantic and badass about living in the desert. I also did my real growing up here (middle school, high school, college). I'm 29 and super excited to see how this state grows and adapts over the next couple decades as more and more young people move here.

I also love having Flagstaff (a place near and dear to my heart as I finished college up there) 2 hours away. Flag is a really tough place to beat in the summertime to get away for a weekend.

And most important, why the fuck do u still post here?

This is a very unique place. There's some very sharp and funny people here. I grew up listening to Chicago sports talk radio as a youngster in Downers and enjoy still having some kind of connection to it. Also, I don't think I'm going to be able to get on arizonafanatics.com and get resourceful opinions on water heaters, Blood Meridian book recommendation, argue Norah Jones vs Alanis Morissette, and talk about how much Bernstein sucks now. That's just not going to happen. I like it here.

I made MANY deliveries to the McDonalds at Oakbrook next to Gibson's. I was a bit at a loss when they tore it down but then my wife informed me the insurance agency was frowning upon deliveries.
There was also a MRI place along 72 or 58. Can't remember. Anything was better than the deliveries to Old Orchard Mall area. Fuck no, that was a long day.

I think Gibson's would welcome that transaction though.

Our property tax bill went up about a thousand dollars. 80% will go to the school districts that have done an all around terrible job especially in the last 15 months. Can't wait to leave, I won't miss much. Family but that's about it.

I used to live in the one-school district south of 75th which feeds DGS. School was shit but I didn't have kids so I didn't care. The property taxes have been pretty flat in the last four years, but when I moved to NC they were 60% of what I was paying in Illinois, for a more expensive house. I saved $200/month in property taxes, which helped offset a larger mortgage.

I do miss going into the city. Not the commute, but working downtown (along/inside of Wacker). My dad owned a business there for 35 years, my mom worked as an executive assistant at a bank there for about 10, I worked there for 17 plus another 10 as a teenager/graduate student working for my dad. Being able to take an hour between meetings and walk across the Loop and back is something I definitely miss.

I also miss the ethnic neighborhoods, although with gentrification some of them were already starting to fade in the last fifteen years.

I'm still in the suburbs west of 294 for 5-6 days a month visiting my father. When he is gone, I will have no desire to return to them other than to visit friends and extended family, and getting lunch at Katy's in Westmont as long as the old guy there is making the noodles. I lived in DuPage County for 22 years, that was enough.
