Stealing a base when a position player is pitching is a lot different then swing at a pitch that a position player throws.

It sure looks like Minnesota switched starting pitchers specifically to hit Mercedes in his first at bat. Then they will bring in their normal starter.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet the Sox score in the first inning.

Nah. Fuck around with position players on the hill and deal with the consequences.

Yermin could’ve picked Cordero off if he didn’t want him to steal, same way Astudillo could’ve thrown a better pitch 3-0 if he didn’t want it shit pumped to center.

Professionals shouldn’t cry about people beating them, particularly when they’re not even trying.

Don't get me wrong, I don't really give a damn, but stealing is worse in my book.

Certainly easier to take an uncontested base than it is to muscle out a 45mph pitch 400ft to straightaway center, I’ll give you that.

Fine. Let them hit Mercedes if that makes thier vaginas feel better.

I just hope the umpires don't jack things up and eject a Sox pitcher if he happens to hit somebody- clearly accidental- afterwards

I am at Charlotte at Durham tonight. Lopez pitching.

The lineup 1-7 is a good mix of youth (Rutherford, Burger Savela) and AAAA guys (Williams, Sheets), with Brian Goodwin DHing. Only 2B/SS is a bit of a black hole.

I find it hilarious that the twins fans and announcers all think it’s hilarious when this pussy lobs shit up there and gets outs and it’s so hilarious, but when someone tells him to get that weak shit lob out of here and parks one it’s so bad for baseball. That clown has no business on the pitchers mound and I hope he gets smashed again the next time he plays “pitcher” for laughs. Fuck him and Roy Smalley and another stupid unwritten rule. That guy was out there trying to make fools of the Sox hitters and when he gets rightfully abused he puts on his frowny face and feels sad. Fuck that shit. And I’m not a Sox fan.

The dumbest part to me is the guy was serving up the same shit on (almost) every pitch.

Had Mercedes gone yard 3-1, no issues. That it happened 3-0 gets the elderly guardians of baseball purity up in arms.

It's pretty ridiculous that they expect a hitter to not swing at a pitch regardless of who is pitching. Stealing bases, going first to third, stuff like that in a blowout sure you can call off the dogs. This is just stupid. Of course when you're 13 games out of 1st this is what you have to look forward to

It’s 3-0 that bothers people, but big picture, professional athletes should never be expected to not try.

I’m more bothered by a team so obviously giving up that they put a guy throwing 40 mph in to pitch. You lose the high ground when you put a guy in not trying to get outs, he is trying to luck into outs and take advantage of “unwritten rules”.

Lopez in the first inning:
Single
Double
Single 2RBI (took second on throw home)
HR just to the right of the batters' eye
Flyout to the warning track just left of the batters' eye
(reliever starts loosening up quickly)
Flyout to the exact same spot on the LC warning track.

33 pitches, 4 ER. If the wind was blowing out even at 5 mph (the flags are limp) it would have been 7-0.

Don't expect him in Chicago any time soon, unless he decides to visit Pilsen.

ETA:. He did not come back out for the 2nd. Wes Helms had seen enough. Some guy name Tomshaw with a 7.4 ERA is in there. Lopez is scheduled to start again on Sunday here in Durham, with the new six game series format.

I'm guessing that this isn't the first time TLR hasn't screwed around with a Mercedes.

Thankfully these guys don't need him to win.
