It was sheer stupidity on the Pirates first baseman. That said, when you great a break like that take full advantage.

It can be both a dumbass play by the 1st baseman, and a great play by Baez.

Great play by Baez and Contreras

Really? I just don't see what's so great about it. In fact, Baez almost fucked it up by standing there to call Contreras "safe" instead of running immediately back to first where the idiot second baseman wasn't covering.

It's really CONEtreras that makes the important play. 1B doesn't brain fart until the throws the ball trying to get Wilson.

I guess he thought the same thing the Pirate catcher did, that it was like a run down between second and third without a runner on first. The problem is that Baez can't be "safe" at home.

Equally likely that the 1B forgot that there was two out.

that's really on the C-he's the QB of the defense. You yell at the dude to tag Baez and ignore the runner. But human instincts are human instincts. You see a runner coming down the line and you call for the ball.

Possibly. My cousin had it on in his office and he called me in to watch the replay and I assumed there was less than two outs as I watched it. It was like a play you'd see in Little League.

This. His effort was far more "brilliant" than Baez, and he was just doing what he was supposed to do.

The second Baez took a step backwards, the 1B should have stepped on the bag. Play over. He fucked up, Cubs took advantage. In fact, the 1B should been charged with two errors in allowing the run to score, and a runner to reach base.

I think this is a classic example of why you still need a big fat guy at 1B that hits a lot of home runs and only cares about the exit velocity from the dugout to the clubhouse to grab a beer and a lung dart.

Fat guy 1B isn't going to start chasing Javy. Doesn't have that kind of wind.

JD seems WAY more comfortable with Boog. Lots of silence over the years with Len.

JD has been able to embrace his sense of humor better while still keeping the level of actual analysis high. Except when Dempster is on.

I don't agree. While the easy play was Baez, Contreras would have been out by a country mile if the 1st baseman throws home earlier.

You're wrong. There are two outs. Conetreras runs until he scores or the inning ends. That's what you're supposed do as a baserunner when there are two outs. The Caller Bob playing 1st base for the Pirates never made the 3rd out of the inning, so you keep running.

Contreras was on 2nd with 2 outs. You put your head down and run until you hear an out or a coach say stop.

Everybody in that play did "baseball stuff" - stuff they were taught to do based on the way a normal person plays baseball.

Baez is not normal.

What the Pirates 1B did is not normal. With 2 outs, tag the bag and the inning is over regardless of what Conetreras does or doesn't do.

You know, just because it is fun to watch, I just watched it a few more times.

I'm not giving Baez enough credit. He was the only one in the moment that knew what was going on. The 3B made a horrible, lazy throw. The 1B ended up so far off the bag from the throw that he got confused.

Baez led to the score. The 2B didn't think to cover the bag. The C easily could have made a bunt-type throw but couldn't because Baez knew enough to haul ass to first before anybody (OK, after he did the umpire's job) to keep the pressure on.

It was chaos.

That was an amazing baseball play by one guy.

I just finally watched it. That is easily the worst bit of MLB defense I've ever seen. The runner scoring at home is one thing....safe at first is another.....BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE. Baez makes it to 2nd on yet ANOTHER bad, lazy throw.

wow...

The 1B is going to get all the shit on this one.

What the hell was the 2B doing? Where would he be going on a ground ball to 3rd with 2 out and a guy on 2nd. At worst, he stays home on his side of the bag unless they had some weird new-age shift on.

On a ground ball isn't he at least cheating toward 1B after he sees a rundown over there with his "guy" clearly running toward home?

If he just wanders over toward first to get a throw -

You should have seen Dr. Ken as a yute, he was a great 3rd string center.

I actually was a 1B. I played baseball lefty so I was not allowed to play 3B even though I was awesome at picking liners. Only got one game there at 3B. Glory days...they'll make you find message boards...glory days....

So, I have some insight into what a 1B does think in that situation.

And, to be clear, and I think I've been quite clear, I enjoy the hell out of that play. One of the greatest plays I've ever seen from an enjoyment standpoint.

When Javy goes into the Hall of Fame, that will be in the reel.
