Posting a video of a guy pausing the video and admitting he "did a quick Google search of the rules..."

Hard to laugh at others making decisions in 5 seconds when he had to Google search a way to understand it.

I did a better analysis of the play.

Nah, this was just really, really, really stupid. It’ll have Sanchez butt fumble or Conseco hit in the head longevity.

You should have seen Dr. Ken as a yute, he was a great 3rd string center.

I actually was a 1B. I played baseball lefty so I was not allowed to play 3B even though I was awesome at picking liners. Only got one game there at 3B. Glory days...they'll make you find message boards...glory days....

So, I have some insight into what a 1B does think in that situation.

And, to be clear, and I think I've been quite clear, I enjoy the hell out of that play. One of the greatest plays I've ever seen from an enjoyment standpoint.

When Javy goes into the Hall of Fame, that will be in the reel.

Not talking about you.

You are reasonable

This play will not live in infamy on account of any of the defenders.

This is a Javy play through and through

What Javy did was not unique at all. Guys run backwards to avoid a tag at 1st all the time.

What was unique was the sheer stupidity & lack of awareness from the Pirates.

No.
It was an absolute moron of a 1st baseman play.

Normally it’s an unremarkable play that results in a tag. Now that it’s on your radar, keep an eye out.

Nor have I.

I’ve seen he/they/we/spot jump back or stop. Never seen someone actively run away from a force out.

It was weird. And weird things happened. And that was cool.

I go back to the key thing was that the 3B throw was so lackadaisical and up the line that it threw the 1B off and triggered (can we still use triggered in a traditional meaning) Javy to retreat back up the basepath and chaos ensued.

I’m literally telling you that it’s something my high school coach told us to do and even at that level, it never worked.

Your high school coach spent time telling you to run away from force-outs at first with runners in scoring position with 2 outs to confuse the defense?

That was a good coach.

Exactly.

The Pirates defense definitely broke down.

But I can’t think of another player in the league that would have capitalized on the defensive breakdown like el mago did.

He is incredibly flawed at the plate but on D and on the basepaths...well...he’s a magician

You played 1st.

Did you ever have a coach tell you with two outs to chase the base runner down no matter what he does or where he goes, rather than just tag the base and end the inning?

First half of the sentence, yes. He didn’t tell us whether or not to do it contingent on the number of outs, so I’ll check in on that. It’s actually smart under 2 outs - you at least have a chance to advance a guy or two.

Addendum: have you guys honestly never had a coach tell you not to run into a tag?

What's interesting even way after Contreras crossed home plate. Say hypothetically the catcher throws it away even further. It's takes a minute to retrieve the hot potato ball. Baez trips before reaching first. Is thrown out by the right fielder before reaching first. Contreras run doesn't count.

That's not really what my argument is. I was saying, as a 1B, no coach tells you about that situation because it never really happens.

The 3B throw was so far up the line, and you can see it in the reaction of the 1B, that he found himself so far up the line that his coaching kicked in that he was in rundown situation.

At that point, you get into a position of "do you think about the rules here or do you do what you've been coached to do in a rundown"?

No coach ever told me at 1B that if the runner runs away from you....go back 4 steps and force him out.....because I've never seen a runner run away from me and, I assume, that coach had not either so why would he even mention it as part of your 1B decision tree.

So, instinctively, as a ball player whose probably played a few different positions in the infield in his life like I had, you feel like you are in a rundown situation and that coaching takes hold rather than your recall of the rule book in a circumstance that nobody ever goes over.

You honestly think a baseball player isn’t aware that there’s no such thing as a rundown between 1st and home?

Have you ever thought about it? Of course it looks ridiculous.

Smarter players would realize but, in the moment, I don't think you've been coached to consider the rule book when a player you need to get out is running away from you.

Not every 1B play is a force play. So, I do think it is reasonable to get into "rundown mode" in this instance.

I feel I've made my position on this issue very clear multiple times. I will take no more questions. And may God have mercy on your souls.

I think his larger point is to provide some insight into why these set of circumstances led to the play unfolding as it did—not to explain why this scenario would end in this result every single time.

I think it’s odd that a baseball fan could watch this sequence of events and come away from it NOT crediting Javy.

Did the defense have lapses? Of course. But Javy put pressure on the defense and forced them to execute. They didn’t. A run scored and he ended up on second. That’s the point

Noted and rejected. While I haven’t been on the first baseman side of that equation, I have been on the base runner side and the laughter from the opposing bench still haunts my dreams.

It is entirely unreasonable for a fielder to not understand a base runner doesn’t become safe by running back to home. Particularly so once he’s a bona fide major leaguer.

I’d like to reiterate that, in my experience, most 1B are fat, beer-drinking, smokers that probably aren’t easily coached and might have 3 kids later in life and associate with weird internet people and…….um…..I’ve never smoked.

And may God have mercy on your souls.

Seriously though, if you didn’t love watching that play, I question why you love baseball.

I don’t care that it was a Cub. Just amazing that 160 years into the game, a play can happen that people who’ve been watching for 40+ years can say - wow I’ve never seen that before.

That’s the real long-game of baseball.

It was highly enjoyable and I had a hearty chuckle or two when I saw it. It may have occasioned a trip to my omni-directional bidet - won’t confirm or deny.
