He doesn’t need the money.

Just last week he bought MGM studios for $8.5 billion.

He can fund this shit himself.

I am not sure you understand how this works. To date, the only customer for planetary landings are the government. The NASA development programs related to landings were shut down. They cannot even send people to the ISS. The private markets, like Boeing, Musk and Bezos invest money in development of rockets and crafts that can take people and equipment to the ISS, the moon, and Mars.

NASA pays for use of these crafts just like you pay United to travel to Chicago or Florida.

So Bezos has invested billions in R&D to build the technology. NASA is a customer.

So, NASA is spending money then?

Lol, it is buying things from companies capitalized by people willing to invest money in very expensive technology. And these are no sure things. It is risk capital at play.

It is hard to believe that our country would view what Bezos has built and the jobs he has created as anything other than a tremendous success story. I am willing to bet that everyone here uses Amazon, a lot watch Prime programming, and many work for companies using AWS.

Unlike short term corporate thinking, Bezos eschewed quarterly profits to build Amazon into what it is today. It was not long ago that the Street derided his business as “selling dollars on the Internet for 95 cents.”

For services yes. They shut down their own launch programs I believe during the Obama administration. So no more Space Shuttles.

We should tax 401(k) loans, I mean literally you use that loophole to save for retirement, robbing taxpayers of income while you take out a loan tax free to buy a new car.

Some say Bezos is the bad guy. Clearly it’s Joe Six Pack and his new F 150.

LOL.

yup...the good ole' 401k tax loophole. the wealthy used this loophole in the 1960s when tax rates for the wealthiest were 70%. someone got smart on the golf course and asked why they pay company pensions?? let's stop paying pensions and make them fund their own pensions with our tax loophole.

that guy should have gotten 8 promotions for the idea.

President Barack Obama lauded NASA's final space shuttle launch Friday (July 8), saying that the blastoff marks the end of one chapter of human spaceflight, but also the start of a new one.

"Today's launch may mark the final flight of the Space Shuttle, but it propels us into the next era of our never-ending adventure to push the very frontiers of exploration and discovery in space," Obama said in a statement.

Atlantis launched into space at 11:29 a.m. EDT (1529 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, marking the final flight of the space shuttle program, which NASA is shutting down after 30 years of spaceflight. The shuttle is carrying four astronauts on a 12-day delivery mission to the International Space Station.

I mean it is fine if you hate him. Every other country in the world is jealous of our tech entrepreneurs. Europe created a special tax just to hit successful American tech companies. The only country coming close to rivaling American tech is China because they wall off their country from Google and Facebook and let domestic rivals beef up on their billion plus population home market.

Why defund NASA and then fund Billionaires?

Why privatize space?

Why not have the government build commercial aircraft and automobiles comrade? Because the private sector allocates capital better.

because they know that true innovation doesn't come from the gvt. its why we don't have a Department of Pharmacy which creates medicines.

Nasa has created nothing. Boeing, Paragon, Northrop, and Raytheon did.

Yes there are products specifically targeted to meet the needs of national governments and thus they are funded by the those gvts to ensure they receive those assets and not some other country.

plenty of scams going on. demand for identity theft has increased due to the generosity of uncle sam. love seeing medicare fraud assholes taken down..plenty of those too.

whats sad is this country started on the basis that federal government is there to protect citizens from other countries, and that's about it. more specifically, tax only when represented (do you know where 30% of your money goes?) everything else should be handled at the state level, because at least people have an option to move if they dont like what their government is doing.

i hear you.

besides the welfare talked about and occasionally scammed - the state will pay for your baby's health insurance while the city will give your kids free lunches at school. toss in a free govt. phone - no worries. you do need the phone to call and make an appointment for the tattoo you've been pining to get.

We've had the weekend to think it over. Anyone have any bright ideas on how to tax gains on things you own but haven't sold?

Since SS didn't like my lottery example because of a technicality on the amount of time normally required to turn it in, how about this?

I become the world's most famous painter. I go to my basement and paint 10 paintings that are the same. I sell painting 1 for $10 million to JORR and pay tax on that. For the other 9 paintings, I just keep them stored in my basement. My net worth is now $100 million based on those paintings. When should I be taxed on the value of the other 9 paintings? What if I keep them for 20 years in my basement because I am fine living off the money I already made and don't need or want more?
