Until the late eighties early nineties it was the case. Don't know anyone arguing against that now.
You are right. I think Joe Gilliam and Doug Williams in the 70s were the highest profile black QBs. The success of Moon and Cunningham in the 80s/90s changed a lot of peoples' minds about black QBs.
As a kid I remember being told that James Harris and Gilliam were trailblazers. I remember thinking that was a low bar since no one ever seemed to talk about them on tv. And since the talking heads didn't talk them up, they weren't REALLY that good.
And then Doug Williams got skunked in the NFC title game then had to wear that L.
