i'm pretty competitive in basically everything I do. i grew up with 2 other brothers and everything was basically a competition. That said, I hate board games with every fiber of my being. I hate being with people that loooooove board games, I hate being explained how a board game works, and I hate how long most set ups and how long it takes to play them. The only redeeming benefits of board game nights is food and the fact its usually done while sitting down.

We get invited to game nights on occasion and i just right away tell people that i don't play board games. understandably they will assure me its because i just haven't played this new game they purchased and are certain I will love it. Hint: I never love it.

my in laws love to play board games. they also like to bring out the board games late, when most reasonable people are starting to go home. Adds 1-2 more hours onto the night

There are some really good newer board games. Bring one of those instead of playing Trivial Pursuit or Scrabble.

my in laws love card games. but they only have 2 they wont to play 99% of the time. but they go to bed at like 9:00 so we generally start and make it half way through. put it aside and are sure we'll revisit the existing game tomorrow. it never happens.

my parents love mexican train or whatever its called. just takes forever.
