Looking for suggestions.

My mom is selling a car, not a trade-in, and does not want to go through a private individual. I explained how she'll lose quite a bit of money going through a dealer but she wants it hassle-free and safe. I have only used CarMax to sell a car a long time ago. Is there anyone in the area you'd recommend? Thanks

Everything I read is the used car market is hot given the dearth of inventory in the new car space. I would start out at CarMax and see what they offer. Other dealers would probably be dying to buy the car as well, but they may try to pressure you to buy something else on their lot.

I used CarMax to dump my ride before I moved to New Zealand. They were very fair and it was zero hassle, got significantly more than I thought I would. One of the few big firms I'd actually recommend to other people.

Depending on value, there may be a tax advantage to trading it in (if she’s getting a new car).

Edit: I see you’ve explicitly said not a trade in, so I disavow my tax comment.

Kars for Kids!

Seriously, I think Carmax is probably your best bet.

Also, the tax deduction benefit goes away if you don't itemize (ie - if you take the standard deduction which became much more common after the tax reform in 2017).

Carvana and Vroom are where a lot of people on my car groups are doing well on.

CarMax will give you pennies on the dollar. It is highly likely that, unless the car is 3 years or newer, clean/spotless, with low mileage, that whatever you sell them will get put on a truck and sent to auction with no fucks given. So they're not going to pay a lot, even with the environment now.

I was referring to the sales tax benefit, but still…disavow.

For what its worth that was the type of car I sold them.

I found it highly worth my time to take it over to CarMax where they will give you a free estimate and print it out for you. I sold them my Jeep Patriot 2 years ago and they offered me above Kelly
Blue Book on it and having that piece of paper in hand is gold when you negotiate a new car. It costs you nothing and if you decide what they offer is fair then take it and run. I did that on another vehicle that I thought they offered me fair value for. It is certainly one of the easiest ways to go.

That the car was an older, higher mileage one? Again, nothing wrong with them, as I love to buy older high mileage ones, spend a weekend in a junk yard or sourcing any necessary used parts, driving the car for a year and flipping it for more than I paid, but yea, CarMax, unless they're gonna put it on their lot, won't pay much.

Nah I sold them a low mile, recently manufactured car with zero cosmetic damage aside from the rims. Got a good price, more than I thought I'd get.

I went to Carmax 1st to get their price and then listed it privately. After a week which included 3 offers I ended up going back to Carmax. Their offer was just $500 less than the best offer I'd received and there was no hassle nor the potential for post-sale feedback from the new owner. It was worth taking a bit less IMO. I'd suggest doing a bit of research online 1st (Bluebook, Edmunds, etc) to get a feel for what the vehicle is worth and then seeing where Carmax comes in (Note: You can get an offer online from Carmax as well which is pretty accurate as long as you don't lie). If it's not wildly out of line then take the Carmax money. Avoiding having to deal directly with people along with the time associated with showing it has real value.

just leave it parked in the city with the keys in it and then you'll be able to report it stolen and get top blue book value paid out without the hassle of having to negotiate a sale

Yea, this market it friggin insane. Everything used is through the roof. Which is why some of the guys I know are selling some of their "toy" vehicles. They're getting big dollars for them.

I certainly wouldn't be a buyer now. Unless you're buying new and can work something, buying used is absolutely silly.

I was just pricing out a car (a newer gen of one I have), just because... Anyway, used, with mileage, are going for $15k - $20k more than what you could've bought them new in 2016'ish when GM threw 20% off MSRP. By that I mean, had I been in a financial position to do so then, I could've bought the car NEW, from Chevy for $36k - $40k. Right now, the same car USED, is $50k or more.

Yeah we are stuck right now. What I was looking at a few months ago is easily 2-4k higher.

LOL! No complaints there... :D

Even she plays in to it. A T-shirt she got me a year or two ago, on the front says "One more car... I Promise!" And on the back has a picture of fingers crossed...

Not my exact one, but close enough...

Thanks for the tips. This should be pretty easy. She is a selling a 2013 Toyota Tacoma 4*4 that is in perfect shape with just a little over 100K miles. The demand for trucks specifically Tacomas is very high and she could get a crazy amount selling it outright but she wants safe and easy. I told her I would take care of all of it but she is stubborn. I have learned not to argue with her.

I feel your pain. She's going to leave at least $1-2K on the table going that route. But....I guess it's her money

My daughter sold her 4 year old Ford Focus, 48000 miles, didnt even have power windows, to Carvana for $11,700. It was such a deal I thought it was a scam.
I insisted on being there when they came out. The representative came to the house, didnt test drive it, checked the VIN and called it in for a pickup.
Car was gone in hours, and the next day the money was in her account. It was so easy, almost too east. You can get the estimate on the APP I believe, its worth a try.
