Who's your Guy/Guys Gals? Local- National whatever. Locally My Favorite Guy ever was probably Lincicome. A truly shitty man with shitty thoughts but a helluva scribe nonetheless.

The difference between Lincecome and Boers is like the difference between a nuclear submarine and a three speed bike. That's just how far superior Bernie is.

Back in the day, most of the old guys on the Sun-Times. But together with his radio and t.v. work, I'd probably go with Bill Gleason.

Terry really wasn't a columnist except for a short period of time. And it will bother him until the day he leaves this earth.

One of the best beat writers evah though.

My favorite was Jauss, because he was so unassuming yet detail oriented. When he died, Bruce Miles told a story about how Jauss would chart pitches in baseball games and keep track of pitch counts, years before it became common practice in the media. But then again, Jauss would show up covering a random Evanston, New Trier, or Niles North basketball or football game if the preps staff was overloaded.

That said, the most influential was easily Bill Gleason. We didn't have cable, but Sunday late afternoon in graduate school and until I moved away a few years later revolved around the original Sportswriters on WGN, and Gleason drove that show's purpose. That spawned everything else nationally, starting with Dick Schaap on ESPN on Sunday mornings, then eventually PTI.

Wilbon pre-heart attack was an excellent writer. Well maybe a little before that, before he started splitting his time between DC and Arizona. Then his kid was born a couple of months later, and he started just mailing it in. It would have been interesting if he had taken the Tribune "In the Wake of the News" job when Bayless left, which eventually went to Mike Downey.

That said, Kornheiser was always a far better writer. Far far better.

I found him an equally compelling radio host and columnist.

Yes. A young One Post was devastated when Bernie left the tribune.

To this day I still use his “some things you suspect, some things you guess, and some things you just know”.

Half the time I couldn't figure out what Lincicome's point was. His tone was hard to decipher (sort of like a hipster scoffing at everything in a way that gives them deniability) and he wasn't always very clear. But when his columns were clear, they were as good as anything you'd read in any genre of writing that week. He could spend an entire column being funny and then drop a stunningly intelligent observation on you. He also wasn't afraid of being truthful. I remember being pretty pissed off at some of his columns, but later I'd either think he was right or that he made a good point. Like Gleason, he certainly wasn't afraid of taking on sacred cows.

(This post may not make sense. So tired. Excuse the sloppiness.)

i usually enjoyed bob verdi's take as a columnist - especially hawks/cubs.

i remember neil milbert and mike perricone were the blackshawks' beat reporters (trib and sun-times). i think it was sam smith (trib) and lacy j banks (sun-times) for the bulls. i remember kevin lamb and later dan pompei as the bears' main guys for the sun-times.

i didn't care for columnists mariotti or boers or the trib's 'in the wake of the news' dave condon (i think, it was).

the sun-times had jerome holtzman (i think) and joe goddard doing baseball.

it's evident that today's print media is sorely lacking.

art petacque with the sun-times was a classic. straight out of a 1940's film noir, top-notch investigative reporter.

There used to be at least 10 columns a day locally and nationally that were must reads sports, or media. Now its more mostly if the headline is interesting, or not sjw. The Tribune's online column comments were terrific. But of course the pc police took that away a few years ago.

That's what is lost today. Personalities today rarely seem to enjoy covering the games. Everything has to be a hot take and the players effort doesn't seem to be valued.

And yeah, Jauss was a great writer who always put the game first.

Talking about guys like them and Gleason and Lincecome is making me sad. There certainly isn't anyone close to that quality locally nowadays. Can you even find that kind of sports writing these days? The Athletic maybe? I don't have a subscription.

Boers was a horrible writer. His time at the Daily Herald will always be the proof.

The Athletic isn't quite there. The beat reporters are a mix between very good and Mark Lazarus. Some of the long form stuff is good as well. Nobody on the Chicago beats is a must read. That's not the case for other teams, the Carolina Hurricanes have a young beat writer named Sara Civian who is excellent, for example.

I know this won't be popular but Telander is a great writer. He wasn't at his best when he went local, after working at SI but his early stuff was still good.

He got hooked on some strange, tangential topics locally and it all went downhill from there.

Way too Boomerish for me. Rick is like one of the people in The Big Chill. Definitely not my thing.
