Fair point. Regardless of if the teammates will admit anything or not, you have to figure there was definitely an "wind out of the sails" moment when they had the news broken to them.

For sure. You prepare for it your entire life and only get a crack at it (under the best of circumstances) once every 4 years. If you lose you'd rather that it not be by default. I do think she is dealing with some very real issues though. Don't know if it is related to athletics or something personal. Probably both.

No it isn't. I doubt seriously if you ever gave a shit about her or women's gymnastics until something like this occurred. Shocking! and some "debt" aye. You have no investment in her. And whatever she has acquired in her life she earned. From what I know of her she is an inspiration on many levels.

You can’t really embrace having no problem being referred to as the goat , proudly wearing it on your uniform, then have a bad performance on the biggest stage your sport has and say “ I don’t feel like doing this today “ without getting blowback ( although the media is certainly trying to have it that way ) . If this were a male athlete ( as has been proven time and time again ) he’d be getting far more grief than the little princess is.

my wife was a high level gymnast and former state champ in Vault. I asked her to compare Simone getting lost in the air on her vaults and put in in perspective and she said it was the equivalent of prime Michael Jordan all of the sudden forgetting how to shoot a basketball.

talk about a total choke job. They say you learn about a person by how they act when they lose, not how they act when they win. We learned a lot about Biles last night with the way she "handled" this adversity.

Probably so but women get pushback in a ton of other areas that men take for granted. We aren't "victims" Brogue

I’m sure you are very inspired. She owes a debt to the people who came before her. Fans who have rewarded her and enriched her. The Olympics are also a form of service.

Or Sax or Knoblauch forgetting how to throw from 2nd to first base. She had the Gymnastic equivalent of the "yips" it seems

Simple question, Reader. Why do you think she is immune to all criticism here?

I never said she was. Several pages back I mentioned how sad it is to see so many piling on her and not considering that whatever she was going through was as serious as she claims. And how few here cared enough about the sport to realize that her performances have been suffering for weeks now.

Or realize how badly she could get if she's nowhere near 100%.

yep, only difference is Sax/Knoblauch weren't GOAT level players in their sport. Not that it's a huge distinction since they were both all star level players who all of the sudden forgot a little league skill, but it's even more alarming when we are talking about the undisputed GOAT in a sport.

If you really follow the logic all the way through, the "mental issue" was that she was going to perform at a level not as good as her best. That's all she was really going through. There were people in the stadium that were much better at gymnastics than her at least for that day.

If I'm an athlete and someone asks why my team lost my answer is now "mental health".

Solid reasoning. I wonder why Reader decided to shit on Kerri Strug while defending Biles. Hmm.

I don't think its "piling on" to criticize an athlete for walking away in the middle of a competition at the highest possible level that can be achieved in that sport. And as I have said three times now, if what she is going thru is that serious, she should not be sitting in front of microphones and cameras in Japan. She should be in a place where she can get the help she needs.

Correct. I don't give a shit about her or her sport. It's pretty funny guys even take the time to not only think about this, but to actually be outraged.

So yesterday I heard about all of this during the day, but my wife was looking forward to watching the gymnastics so she didn't get any spoilers. I didn't say anything about it when we turned on the Olympics last night, curious to hear what her spontaneous take would be when Biles backed out. Her response really surprised me, I thought for sure she would be more sympathetic, but she was surprisingly UNsympathetic towards Biles. It really rubbed her the wrong way the way she was bouncing around clapping and cheering like nothing was wrong, and it REALLY rubbed her the wrong way watching her give interviews after with her Silver medal around her neck like it was all no big deal. I though it was a little nervy to give a post-meet interview all proud of her Silver medal, but I am sure there is another side to the story and I do wish her well if she has some kind of mental issues, but it sure was a bad look.

And yet you're the one tossing out bullshit about what you think she owes to anyone other than her teammates. Did you ever play an actual sport? And have a teammate struggling with a mental issue? I did, the timing was bad for the team, but we knew and respected that he was struggling and trying to come to grips with it.

I stopped caring when they allowed NBA players to participate ironically. Was once a huge Katarina Witt (bad as hell) fan back in the day though. I really used to care when it was mostly an amateur competition.

When you havent mentioned mental health previously as youve gone out and slayed the world then have a poor performance and shut it down citing mental health but not to the point where youve said you wont compete again this week week it certainly at the very least leaves the door open to questions .

After that practice vault she messed up you could tell by her body language and facial expressions she was done. It was like that had never happened to her before and she did not know how to react. You see the same look and behavior at the high school level. Especially at the state track meet. Kids are done before they even compete and there is not much you can do to snap them out of it.

Which pitcher forgot how to throw to first base on pickoff attempts?

That comes down to the whole point of sports. Even the best in the world have a bad day. It doesn't become a "mental health" issue because someone who is the best in the world on most days wasn't on a specific day.

Number one Jay Cutler wasn't taking the same risks as her. Quarterbacks are coddled. What she does requires more toughness.
Two, I doubt that he had dealt with sexual abuse and been the face of cleaning up a sport.
Third, it's funny that you'd think that I cared, I'm not a Bears fan.
Finally (& I just heard this pointed out) I don't remember the same scorn heaped on Jordan when he abruptly quit in 93 right before camp.

I selected Cutler for the reason that you are not a Bears fan. If that scenario happened you would have been one of the first in line to criticize him for being a mental midget, and would have been laughing gleefully as it happened.

I'm also reminded of the MLB catcher who suddenly got the yips trying to throw back to the pitcher. It happens at all levels.

I can't really defend the manner in which she actually withdrew and media etc. I will say though that if she has some mental "yip" about what she has to do then she might be scared as hell. If you have no confidence if or how you will land with all the aerial stuff they do I get it.

And for as long as I have been watching sports the term "mental" has been used to describe the performance of athletes. If she had a sudden lack of confidence because she bombed on one of her performances it is still a "mental" health issue. Its just not the sort of mental health issue that most are probably thinking of when they think of mental health.

My guy Ben Simmons had a "mental" health issue during the NBA playoffs that was sort of similar in fact.
