'69 guys probably rate at the top because they won nothing and made the HOF. However Rizzo is less accomplished despite winning a WS, so its a tough balance

I think Rizzo is properly rated by fans who don’t camp out on Twitter during games and actually try to understand the game.

He was never a legit MVP candidate. Maybe 2016. But he was a fringe all-star that during his prime always had quality at bats and was clearly instrumental in the organizations most successful 5 year stretch.

I think the average dope cub fan will be shocked at how replaceable his stats will be at first base.

Rizzo did what we asked him to do, and what we needed him to do, and when it was time to say goodbye, they did. Right time, right place and right timing for leaving.

Peak value below Derrek Lee, but overall better.

I would take D Lee over Rizz. Put prime D Lee in the middle of the order of the Cubs teams Rizz was on and D Lee would have been an absolute monster

Konerko was better overall. He was a legit power threat up until the last year or two of his career. 400+ homers and a .280avg for the White Sox.

The last few years brings Rizzo down but he was an integral part of the rebuild and the core that went to the NLCS three straight years. I think the emotion right now is just that, emotion, but when the dust settles after this trade he'll be remembered as key piece to a really good Cubs team. Not sure if #44 gets retired, but it will be a conversation for sure.

Good player. Couple of notches below getting his number retired for his production.

Might get his number retired when considering production and what he meant for 2010s Cubs and off-field ambassador contributions.

man, thats tough. i can see them doing it, but the guys that have had it retired by the cubs were not just cubs greats but all time greats of the game.

Solid player hampered somewhat by injury. Probably the best defensive 1B who could actually hit in the last 20 years. Got killed by the analytics and the shifting.

Ideal FOTF, nice Italian boy who overcame health adversity at a young age. But he seems to be the little brother who everyone outside the family loves but can never truly lead inside the family. There are hints of internal trouble with Contreras and Baez, as well as rumblings that he and Castellanos didn't get along.

At the end of the day, 1B is the easiest position to refill on a rebuilding team.

Ron Santo was a really good player, but not an all time great.

Which of course is why he is in the Hall of Fame. Along with Harold Baines.

hall of famers, then. which one could argue qualifies as an all time great. regardless, the bar is established it would seem. But i can see the 2016 sentimentality overriding that

Baines had more hits, homers, RBI, runs, higher avg, but I don't believe I have ever called him an "all time" great.

Because he was an above average DH

Right. He was above average. I never said that Santo was "below average" just that he was not an "all time" great. The other Cub retired numbers are greats.

He'll always be compared to Votto and now Goldschmidt.

He was a guy who understood a proper approach to hitting. Didn't seem to translate to some of his teammates though.

I don't think he was all that overrated....not with Baez and Bryant on the team.

Can we re-name "the Pantheon of Overrated Cubs" award to the "Ron Santo Award"?

Just above Cubbie Andre Dawson. But barely.

No shame in not being as good as Abreu.

I might take this question seriously if it wasn’t from a guy whose team retired a guy’s number that was still playing for another team and who played another decade.

Dawson won an MVP and was a far superior defensive player.
