I still don't think it swayed many. I think that someone put the idea out there that bad is good and people, afraid to disagree in this particular case, go on the offensive and make a show of agreeing. There's an implied threat of sanction behind many of the celebrations of Biles.

(Wow, that sounds pretty crazy, but I did say "many.")

It's a no-win argument, anyway, because "she's still the GOAT, even before this Olympics!"

I don’t give a shit about gymnastics. Don’t care at all. She’s clearly on the short list of best Americans ever and did her best in every olympics. She’s the most decorated gymnast in American history.

I understand your culture war inclination. Keep it to that. As I said multiple times, go after the media for calling her brave and all that dumb shit. Right there with you. Anyone calling her out specifically is just being ignorant. That should be easy enough to agree on.

I think that’s a terrible analogy.

There’s a handful of players who have become paralyzed from football. There’s dozens (more, idk the nunber) who have from gymnastics. Ones competing for their country, one is not. The parallels are just fucking dumb.

She is the best gymnast in history who can do things no other gymnast can do. But she competed in the beam because she already had a GOAT tour planned to get paid but couldn’t claim GOAT if she had less medals than Shannon Miller. So, instead of withdrawing because of her mental health, she competed because her wallet depended on it. She Lebron’d it. She undermined an actual social issue she brought attention to because her sponsors and checkbook couldn’t handle it while also showing that she wasn’t critically wounded as she told the world. Is that all her fault? No. But everyone has to take some responsibility for their image and the results of the image they push. She is no different and should not be held to a different standard just because she is a woman or a gymnast or an Olympian or whatever. She gets the criticism she deserves that comes with the image she created and the money it generates.

She probably shouldn't have talked tonight and said the criticism was worse because she's a woman.

I'm not Frank but I think I'll answer. I watched her heroic performance last night and it gave me a new perspective. I think what happened to her was real. My problem was that she went to the "mental health" excuse when it was simply an athletic competition where she was not going to perform well based on how she was feeling that day. In any other athletic competition, it would be a "slump". The issue is that she immediately played the "mental health" card which makes it sound as if she was still the best gymnast in the world that day. The gold medal winners in this Olympics should have an asterisk because Biles should have been the one winning that medal. Even with her performance yesterday it was an amazing accomplishment that the best gymnast in the world could win a bronze medal after dealing with the "mental health" aspect of it.

Had she just said from the beginning "I was having issues with my twists and was not going to perform well and my teammates were going to get higher scores than me" then it's a very minimal story.

According to this article, while gymnasts can experience injuries such as wrist fractures, cartilage damage, and ACL tears, catastrophic injuries such as paralysis are rare.

I heard some gymnast commentator say she thought Biles was on the team this go round partly as a result
of the Nassar thing. Biles wanted to be on the team to keep an eye on the girls to make sure they weren't experiencing any mistreatment; which good on her if that's the case. Also, the gymnast mentioned that the gymnastics community places as much or even more blame on Béla Károlyi and his wife for what happened as they do Nassar. Apparently the Karolyi's were real fuckers and fostered a super toxic environment in which the girls trained.

Maybe if these games had taken place 12 months ago Biles would've been in a better place mentally/physically to compete? Dunno how much of a diff there is between 23 and 24, both seem exceptionally aged for an Olympic gymnast. But then there's that 46 year old Uzbekistani chick, so who knows.

It would be unusual for somebody that outwardly religious to be gay, no?
