The last couple seasons are dogshit, everyone I think except Brick acknowledges this, but I forgot how good the first few years were. In season 3 of a rewatch now. Just a fucking fantastic show early on.

When they had the books to work with it was great.

The first four are all great but they are still a little clouded by the looming knowledge that the series gets wrapped up in the worst way possible.

The action episodes still play.

The narrative driven episodes lost any rewatch value when the ending turned out to have been farted out by a couple incompetents.

Didn't they run out of material from the books for the final two seasons? Without George R. R. Martin they actually had to write scenes themselves. haha No wonder it was so bad.

The chick with the dragons was just way too much. Maybe because she was not a strong enough presence?earlier on yes it was great. I would like to have seen some of the early characters get past the first season.

The last two seasons were fine. I have no real desire to rewatch any part of it again. I'm excited for the new shows if they ever actually come out.

yeah this can be applied to almost any show now. it's proof that no writer actually designs an entire treatment. beyond 2010, almost every show's last 2-3 seasons and finale are garbage. it can also be said that shows probably shouldn't have a lifespan of more than 6 seasons.

I think it's actually gotten better in regards to tv shows but the problem with virtually all of them is that the show is created with a very loose "ending" that has to be filled in slowly and then all tied up with no real plan. The same thing is happening with the GoT books. So you can show up to film on day one of a show saying "Ok, the last scene will be Person X doing Thing Y" but then you either ignore that storyline(as GoT did) for many seasons or you spend the whole time writing for an ending that may not happen.

In a perfect world, the ending of GoT would have been rewritten based on where they actually were rather than where they intended to be. They didn't, and then they shortened the season so much that it was rushed and the payoff was average at best.

Here's my ending: Peter Dinklage wakes up surrounded by people on a beer soaked barroom floor where he was working. The guy who plays Ogre in Revenge of the Nerds is apologizing profusely and checking to see if he's okay after setting the bar record for the midget toss. Ogre buys him a beer and they start talking. Ogre says, "I was afraid you were really hurt. You were out for five minutes." Then Dinklage starts telling him about the weird dream he had when he was unconscious. He says, "And you know how dreams often don't make any sense? This one got really dumb right at the end. The chick everyone liked did a heel turn and burned up the city with a dragon. But just as I was appointing the new king I came to."

the books were originally a planned trilogy that martin's publisher convinced him to extend. that's why since book 4, it feels like he's making it up while he goes along, because he literally is. and that's why he's had so much writer's block for the past 20 years. i think now the pressure's off, but we still may never see books 6 and 7 while he's alive. fantasy authors typically are outlived by their own yarns.

j.k. rowling seemed to have found a way to tie up her harry potter story around book 4 (that is, having a clear path to finishing the whole story eventually), on the other hand. the first 3 books are mostly surrounding capers; then, it becomes more of a coming-of-age narrative by "goblet of fire". it's one of the few times a book-to-series (film or TV) had equal success, because everything was right there and neatly fulfilled.

my belief is still that since about 2013, a lot of TV show pilots were originally movie scripts that got turned into shows, and the writers had no idea what to do with the story. it could even go back as far as "Lost".

It seems like most TV show pilots of a start and the very end.

I think a good example is How I Met Your Mother. If there was any show that should have thrown out the planned ending it was that one.

Before it ended, I had rewatched it 2 or 3 times.

Now, I'd probably just pick and choose out individual scenes. I watch the "I'm going to eat every fucking chicken in this room" scene at least once per year.

I really enjoyed it....up until they introduced the Wightwalkers, so yes...seasons 1 and 2 I liked a lot. By season 4 I thought it unwatchable.

I think Season 4 is still great. It was Season 5 when the cracks started to show.

But S4 still had Viper scene with Tyrion to become his champion which is one of the best scenes of the series.

I liked it all the way through the end. I'll probably save the re-watch for my kids.

I started to jump off when they killed Myrcella. That was some of the laziest writing I've ever seen. They made some really bad choices when they got off the books.

right, but they weren't a major part of the series until later.

The whole "hey the zombies magically produced a giant chain to pull a dragon out of the ice" was jumping the shark for me.

I've never seen one episode. Am I really missing something here?

Imo you're missing 4-5 very quality seasons of TV, so no, not really in the grand scheme of things

I loved GoT but I'd just watch The Witcher instead since most people ended up getting annoyed by the last 1-2 seasons of GoT and so far we don't know how annoying The Witcher will get at the end.

I went in knowing that the timeline is confusing for the first half of the season and I thought it was great.

I thought it was bad. MANY disagree. I'm ok being in the minority.

For the record....MRS BigW72 hated it even more than I did.

Amazon is doing a Lord of the Rings prequel with nudity. Who in the hell wants to see that? They spent half a billion dollars on the 1st season. It looks like its going to be a debacle.
