I heard some gymnast commentator say she thought Biles was on the team this go round partly as a result
of the Nassar thing. Biles wanted to be on the team to keep an eye on the girls to make sure they weren't experiencing any mistreatment; which good on her if that's the case. Also, the gymnast mentioned that the gymnastics community places as much or even more blame on Béla Károlyi and his wife for what happened as they do Nassar. Apparently the Karolyi's were real fuckers and fostered a super toxic environment in which the girls trained.

Maybe if these games had taken place 12 months ago Biles would've been in a better place mentally/physically to compete? Dunno how much of a diff there is between 23 and 24, both seem exceptionally aged for an Olympic gymnast. But then there's that 46 year old Uzbekistani chick, so who knows.

No. I'm of the mindset that she is (or at least was) an all time great gymnast who had been to the highest level her sport offers, succeeded at that highest level, then quit on her team and her country and is being praised for it.

It's not a two way street. Either she is a quitter, or she has/had some serious mental issues that needed to be addressed. If the latter were the case, she should not have been doing press conferences in Japan. She should have been home or in a hospital somewhere getting the help she needed.

I give her a lot of credit for persevering after going through the very public Nassar shit. That had to be tough to even go outside, much less be the face of her sport.

I agree. That doesn't mean she can't make a wrong decision and be judged for it. JORR recently said, "Life comes at you fast". Staying on your toes is really the only way to come out the other end of a tragedy.
