2013 CSFMB ROY

As a little kid it was Under dog. I still remember my mom being late to pick me up and getting home didn’t as it ended and being pissed off about. Ducking great space coaster? Look, Gary Gnu was fine but he was no Underdog.

Of course I was a Scooby fan. Actually, some of my favorite moments as a parent have been watching the old ones (even some of the newer ones) with my kids and knowing at their age I was digging the creeper episode as well.

I did love the Animaniacs. Most of the ones my kids watch that are modern don’t do much for me, Phineas and Ferb has its moments but it’s not so new anymore I suppose.

Greatest single episode of any cartoon ever, from which Louis CK later stole the plot for an episode of his FX show and won an Emmy:

BnB spin-off Daria was a great show, the Fashion Club were the original mean girls/vocal fry crew. Quinn denying to her fashion club friends that Daria was her sister, "that girl who lives with you" or that Daria was an exchange student

Johnny Quest was fantastic. That might have been the first cartoon not directed at kids. The writing and animation was probably the best work Hanna-Barbera has ever done. If I'm not mistaken it aired on prime time and must of confused a lot of parents who just assumed animation was for little kids. There was an episode with this energy monster that was killing people that scared the piss out of me. I bought the box set for my kids and they thought it was great and it still holds up.

Rocky and Bullwinkle was great and they did some other stuff that was fantastic too like Super Chicken, Tom Slick, and George of the Jungle.

The Japanese UHF stations used to show a lot of anime. Even though this was late 80s and they were showing stuff from the 70s the animation was way better than the stuff we were doing.

Daria was good. My wife had a couple friends out in Montana that I referred to as Daria and Jane. Always went over well.

As someone who grew up on Ray Rayner of course Looney Toons was king, but Bugs Bunny was the main draw. Tweety bird and Sylvester and Pepe Le Pew were too repetitive. Scooby-doo is certainly an all-time favorite but only lasted 2-1/2 seasons before it took a precipitous drop. Guest stars (Batman, Jonathan Winters etc), Scrappy-doo, Scooby-dum, the laugh-olympics. It was sad. I watched all of those Hanna-Barbera cartoons but never really cared about any of them outside of Secret Squirrel. Now the Sid and Marty Krofft stuff was horrendous yet entertaining. (note: I bought a DVD collection so I could watch them with my daughter. Still awful but oddly amusing). Finally a shout-out to Hong Kong Phooey.

2013 CSFMB ROY

All-time favorite cartoon is the Hobbit with John Huston as the voice of Gandalf. Masterfully done with excellent vocal music, like John Denver. Lord of the Rings cartoon movie is good too, but too bad it was unfinished. Saw it as a kid in the theater at the York Theater in Elmhurst. That was around '78.

I always liked the old superhero cartoons that were played during the Bozo show, like Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk and the Fantastic Four. My favorite, though, was the 1967 Spiderman cartoon. I still remember the episode with Spidey and Mysterio. Not a huge fan of Bugs Bunny, but I did like Tom and Jerry and G.I. Joe. Cobra Commander in that was unforgettable. Very dark for a kids cartoon but enjoyable.

The Star Trek cartoon was good, too. The one where Shatner and Nimoy did the voices.
