With music gear not everything is directly replaceable and production changes from era to era a lot, so while you can buy a replacement it isn't the same thing. There is also the feeling with musical gear that older is always better as production standards tend to slide over years etc... which there is some truth to. Plus you are out from being able to rent it again the time you are out and not all of it is easily reacquired in a timely fashion. They have been doing this for 40 years and this is the first time they had someone deliberately destroy rented gear so I get the shock of it.
