I realize part of it is 2021 baseball, but when 16 of your 24 outs are K’s, its hard to put a rally together

What was the point of trading for Kimbrel if you're not gonna use him there? Did they feel bad about taking Eloy and Cease and want to give the Cubs Madrigal for nothing?

An error followed by a 4 pitch bases loaded walk isnt ideal either.

Oh well. Split tomorrow.

Blame Gordo. And bummer. And Ruiz. And the offense.

And benetti just because.

This bullpen is becoming more and more of an issue. I don't want to hear about the offense or "run support". You're gonna run into to good pitchers having good days like Ray did today. You can't outslug teams all the time. Every reliever is working from behind in too many counts.

Best pitcher in MLB the last month. You got through him with a tie. And then mediocrity hit the mound and mediocrity managed in the dugout. Same ol same ol.

1 run Monday
5 yesterday with 18 hits
1 run today

Yep, its the bullpen's fault.

Yeah Frank, they're supposed to score 7 every game. The bullpen guys get paid to A) not walk anyone and B) record outs. They're failing on both counts.

This is related to the idea that "starting pitcher wins are meaningless". Here's a game tied 1-1. The Sox are supposed to have this great bullpen. But they couldn't hold the tie and they gave up the game. Sure it would be great if the Sox loaded the bases and Abreu cranked a granny before Kimbrel gave up runs with wild pitches or Hendriks allowed another two-run shot. But that's not something that can always be counted on.

I have to listen to Beckham and Benetti talked about how the next guy up absolutely destroys lefties with Beckham then equivocating that Bummer is "not an ordinary lefty". Bullshit. The bullpen blew this game. Nearly blew last night. And blew the night before.

I think all of it is true right now. The re-formed lineup can’t hit. The dominant bullpen can’t throw strikes or get outs. And aside from a couple guys, the starters suck.

They should just be grateful they’re in a shit division and hope things click over the next 5 weeks.

They score 3 on Monday, win.
They score 4 today, win.

Thats 7 total. Over two games. Not every game. Not a big ask, but here we are.

Plenty of blame to go around.

The Kimbrel trade is going to be viewed poorly.

Kimbrel was gonna be the stopper tonight. Hendriks pitched a lot last night and wasn't gonna be used. This is according to Steve Stone on the Score today. When Stone says somethin' I believe it and sure enough that looked to be the fuckin case.

and tried to give away the one win in Tampa.

The bullpen was supposed to be a weapon this year and it has been enhanced. I don't know where it ranks but I cannot remember a group that has pissed down its leg as often as they have. I have zero confidence in our late inning guys. Kopech, Crochet and Tepera are the only ones who don't put me on the edge of my seat. I don't want to join the chorus on this but I also don't think Larussa has been great managing the group.

The Hernandez trade as well. Every team will wish it had a guy like Madrigal over the next 10 years. He's like salt, enhancing everything around him.

Yep. Hernandez was a second tier option that people talked themselves into believing was a premium player. He's just a guy.

Relievers are such a fickle lot. Has any team been able to set up a system that produces reasonably consistent bullpen performance year after year? I think the only way to attempt it is just to run through a lot of them every year and discard the ones who are having a bad year. If that theory is correct, I suppose signing Hendricks, or any reliever, to a multi year deal is a mistake.

At least that didn't cost much. Though it's the Sox so Pilkington will probably turn out to be Clayton Kershaw. And I will say it's a pleasure to watch Hernandez play second especially when it comes to pivoting on the double play.

But Madrigal is a special player. The kind of guy that can break a pitcher's back. The worst thing that happened to the Sox this year was him getting hurt. If he hadn't the Kimbrel deal wouldn't have occurred. And it's worse because it's the fucking Cubs.

Right. How much better is Craig Kimbrel than Cody Heuer? Certainly not a Nick Madrigal better. And maybe not better at all.
