I don't think that's enough. I think there is a feeling of worthwhile, improvement, or accomplishment that needs to be achieved to feel successful. It varies from person to person. I've had a few successes over the last couple years that made me feel good. If I looked at the big picture I guess I'm successful but those times where I did something is what does it for me.

Success is relative. Most people equate the word with money. There are MANY other ways to enjoy success, as gd mentions above.

I have a group of close friends that I have known for 35+ years. There are five of us that have been pals since attending the same preschool and we all grew up together. Four of the five of us still see each other regularly for golf or other social functions, and even thought its less frequent, when we do see the 5th guy we pick up right where we left off as if we just had a couple beers together last weekend. Having ONE friendship-- much less five-- that stretches from toddler to middle aged adulthood is incredibly successful on an emotional level.

because they are using the wrong goals by which to define success

A happy marriage producing good kids is rewarding throughout life and is as big a step at creating a better world than just about anything else you can do

That combined with financial security is pretty fulfilling.

there are plenty of happy poor families.

The most comforting thing you find in an obituary isn't the accomplishments. It is "passed while surrounded by spouse and loving family".

It is ancient wisdom.

Yep! Just reading this board and seeing/hearing thoughts from people outside of here, it appears that the majority of people who've had great financial success are almost always angry and miserable. I can somewhat understand the gripes of the educated homemakers.
