He sure did. I'll tell you what, as stoic is this guy is I'm happy he will be on the US side for the Ryder Cup. You may see him last or second to last on Sunday for the singles matches.

It wasn't on the green and Cantlay was behind him. probably well behind him. You never see pros calling out their playing partner like that.

He’s a sensitive heel. Not a great combo…

I have to spend a boatload of time at the Ryder Cup for professional obligations and may be rooting against the USA.

#Team Bryson. Cantlay is slower than fuck and Brooksie' is the only guy in history to get stoner DJ upset enough to get into a fight.

I don’t follow golf, but cantlay plays slower than Bryson? Genuine question.

Slow golf oughtta be punishable by death.

 what an absolute asshat

Quote:
Bryson DeChambeau lost the BMW Championship on Sunday when his birdie putt on the sixth playoff hole didn’t fall, giving Patrick Cantlay the win in what was a tremendous final round of the PGA Tour’s second of three playoff tournaments.

DeChambeau has had a rough go of it lately with fans who have been heckling him with “Brooksie” chants pretty much every time he tees it up. It stems from his beef with Brooks Koepka and is something that is getting really old and dumb and should stop.

Apparently a fan yelled “Brooksie” at DeChambeau as he angrily made his way to scorer’s tent just moments after he missed that birdie putt and things almost got out of control.

ESPN’s great Kevin Van Valkenburg was on the scene following DeChambeau up the hill and through the crowd and had this report of the situation:

Halfway up the hill, something happened that made me feel like we’ve arrived at a miserable place in the never-ending circus that is DeChambeau. A patron waited until DeChambeau had walked by, but was not out of earshot, then sneered from over the rope line “Great job Brooksie!” DeChambeau spun around in a rage and began briefly walking in his direction.

“You know what? Get the f— out!” DeChambeau yelled. He had rage in his eyes.

I’m being dead serious when I say it could have gotten ugly really fast. Maybe not “Malice At The Palace” bad, but in that moment, nothing would’ve surprised me. A rope line is little more than a polite suggestion when it comes to security a golf tournament. DeChambeau had been hearing, and ignoring, that kind of taunt all week. But everyone has their breaking point.

Van Valkenburg said that DeChambeau then had cops deal with the fan and stormed away.

He makes his bed with the Koepka thing. Acknowledging the people who yell "Brooksie" at him is only going to make the problem worse. He likely has some rage or mental issues as evidenced by him shriveling up on four different putts to win the tournament yesterday, and a six footer that he missed for a 59 on Friday.

Cantlay is not a fast player, but nobody is slower than Bryson or JB Holmes.

He's been doing it all year long, usually through his caddy while claiming it's not because they shouted "Brooksie" at him, but because they did it during his swing.

The cops just escort the fan from the course. No charges, they are just removed from the gallery.

In fairness, Bryson isn't the only Tour player to have a fan ejected for yelling something. Somebody (might have been Justin Thomas?) had a fan booted earlier this season after they yelled for his shot to "get in the bunker." Not the most colorful thing to yell, but golf is supposed to be a respectful gentleman's game.

I'm guessing the cops came because DeChambeau is a millionaire golfer and the fan is some ham and egger. Seems like event management 101.

Spectators at a golf tournament are guests of the host, they have no Constitutional right to be there or act however they want. Gold decorum has gone downhill for decades, hastened by tournaments like the Phoenix weekend, where the crowd is nearly out of control. Much of it stems from the huge increase in formerly-non-golf fans following Tiger. For a time, it worked to his advantage, but, he too, ranted about cameras and noise from the fans. Last year showed they can hold tournaments without fans and do just fine, maybe even net more.

The police officers are already at the tournaments for security reasons. I'm surprised DeChambeau stepped back and asked them to handle the heckler, which I think, is actually the right way to handle it.He may hold his own against a single fan, but in a crowd? All bets are off.

The tournament and tour officials need to step up and end the slow play and untoward behavior, that is their responsibility, as well as limiting the asshat heckler.

Slow play is an issue.

They are playing on pristine greens that they've practiced on for a few days already. They have extensive notes.

Take your time on the practice rounds so you know what you are doing when the lights are on.

I get you want to parade around your putt for 10 minutes to make sure there isn't an ant that suddenly showed up.

Take a look or two at the angle and get to it.

It's not just on the greens. Its also doing physics experiments in the middle of the fairway after your playing partner hits his approach shot.

Agreed.

Every shot is Gene Hackman measuring the basket height in Hoosiers.

You've hit a million shots. Get a yardage, check the trees and hit it.

Isn’t that the type of thing they shouldn’t need, what with being the best in the world and all? I’d rather they just nominally fine guys for slow play.

Or shame them. Fine or shame should do the trick.

They embrace technological gains in every other aspect of golf. Why not embrace technology that would speed up play?

My question is more whether it would speed up play or if it would lead to the Brysons of the world getting a distance on every conceivable landmark between them and the hole 40 times a round.

This.

DeChambeau is a hot-tempered db that gagged away a victory by repeatedly missing makeable putts when the pressure was on. He should have kept his head down and ignored the jeers. His reaction will only lead to more hecklers trying to get under his (thin) skin.

The pros were allowed to use rangefinders earlier this year at a tournament, but I don't recall seeing whether that actually sped up play.

EDIT: After a quick search, I couldn't find anything coming close to stating either way whether rangefinders sped up play at the PGA this year. But there was a quote from Billy Horschel that said rangefinders sound like a great and easy way to speed up play, but what MANY don't fully realize is that tour pros want MANY more yardages than just "to the pin", and bouncing a handheld laser off something like the correct back edge of a bunker from 200 yards out is a little bit tricky, and getting a proper/consistent distance reading on a flat patch of ground (like the back edge of a green) at that distance is virtually impossible. So yeah, the pros can instantly know how far from the pin they are, but they're still going to walk off distances to figure out how far bunkers are, etc.

Seems like the PGA can introduce more/better technology to give these guys the yardages they want from wherever they are on the course to speed up play, or they could doggedly enforce the PoP rules they already have on the books.
