Pot + lid + boiling = distilled water. Of course, if there were solids in the water after boiling (can't imagine there would be much), I'd use a ladle and take from the top of the pot.

It depends on the level to which you wish to decontaminate your water. Boiling with the lid on raises the pressure inside the pot and thus raises the temperature at which the water boils. That may kill more bacteria, which is probably good enough for this scenario.

But, allowing the distillate to simply drain back into the water in the pot will actually only raise the total concentration of contaminants in the resulting water, as some small amount of the steam will escape the pot. Dipping off the top simply eliminates large mass contaminants. True distilled water is boiled into steam and then removed into a condenser to be cooled back into liquid. The original volume of water is boiled down to a fraction of a remainder, which is then highly contaminated, but still liquid enough to be disposed of.

Using the distilling evaporator at my job, we seek distillate with less than 2micromhos of conductivity. Pure enough to release back into the environment. With our multi-stage system, we make water at 0.055 microsiemens/cm, pure enough to not conduct electricity.

Just makin' water out of water. When you work inside a giant coffee maker, you like to keep your water clean.

I think most of the boil orders are for cryptosporidium. Basically they find that animals are pissing and shitting in the water supply. Just a quick boil is enough to kill the parasite.

For your job, that's probably required. For drinking/cooking while there is an issue with the water treatment plant, that's overkill. Last time we had to boil water was in February when we had the deep freeze in Texas. We had some bottled water but I also drank some boiled water. No issues. Houston tap water tastes pretty bad as it is so boiling didn't help it there.

Some of our applications require water quality that low but that's mostly for analytical methods. Our normal work doesn't require that level of clean water.

FF, there was an outbreak in Wisconsin in regards to Cryptosporidium (Sp?) where for a pretty good period of time people had to be boil water up here. I don't think I lived here at the time, but remember it from my soon to be in laws at the time.
