obvious he killed her. Now the real interesting part is where is the guy? I say suicide but my wife thinks he's hiding in the wilderness.

We have a young 22 yr-old girl who clearly wasn't very bright that's now dead and a 23 year-old whack-job that's either dead, going to be dead, or going to spend many years in prison.

Good Lord, someone please tell me these two are not representative of our future society.

No. Those two were our best and brightest.

from the articles I've read it sounds like she was bat shit crazy and got physical when they argued. I'm guessing he got physical right back at her and bltch couldn't handle the smoke.

If there's one thing I've learned through all of this, it's that Hiking People tend to be weird. Who delights at driving for 15+ hours to be in the middle of nowhere to live in your own filth without a shower for weeks on end?

Once, for about a minute, I thought I enjoyed camping. Now I have trouble finding hotels I can tolerate.

The crowd parting like the Red Sea as my group walked to the showers on the ferry from Kake to Petersburg Alaska made it all worth while. I imagine my parents burned the luggage I hauled my gear home in.

I don’t mind camping but it is getting harder to sleep on the ground. Haven’t done an extended trip since the kids.

I saw a bunch of people doing some long ass multiple day or week hike when I was in CO. It looked miserable. I drove to a park and hiked for a half hour or so, saw the cool waterfall and then drove back to the cabin. I am up for anything that will fit into a day but you can keep the camping and backpacking shit.

Now back to the story.....why would this guy kill her, leave her right by the damn campsite and then freak and return to Florida as if nothing happened. You are out in the middle of nowhere with countless accident death scenarios. Push her off a cliff or something and say she fell. Hell he could have just left her there. A dick move but hardly a crime.

Could be that most murders aren't really good at thinking these things through.

Guy was already punching above his weight class (unfortunate idiom though it may be) and she apparently wanted to make it as a hiking vlog social media star. Add to that the petulant rage he would supppsedly display in front of her friends along with the DV incident recorded by the cops....not a good recipe.

He's probably gator feces now, though.

From my limited experience section hiking the AT, people don't spend more than a week max out on the trail before dropping into a town for provisions and a night at a hotel / shower etc. I'd guess 3 to 5 days and nights on trail to one night in town on average? getting stocked up and cleaned up and drunk/high. Lotta freaking drugs and drinking on the AT. And there's a good number of hikers who basically hike from hotel to hotel (or hostel/BnB type places along the trail), with exceptions for sections without easy access to amenities. There are trails like the Camino de Santiago Trail in Spain where it's more like a extended (500 mile) wine/spanish food crawl. That one sounds like it'd be highly bikeable; and probably makes more sense to bike the Camino than hike it.

true crime stories are so much better when everything has already been out there. when you're following one live, piece by piece, you see how bad the reporting is.

these two seemed more fitted to a "cops" episode than "american monster" or "evil lives here". even "dateline" will have trouble trying to convince me these kids are worth an hour's time of coverage.

the story of harold henthorn, on the other hand, i would be susceptible to the whole docucluster treatment that true crime gets these days.

You could have stopped right there. Or with Henry Kissinger.

From what I've read and listened to, Theranos strategy was to associate itself with names that impress folks like Walmart heirs and the Devos family and then leverage those associations into funding via "dumb money": https://youtu.be/BgNfrDXr7uA?t=554 as Theranos rec'd minimal funding from traditional silicon valley vc's.

Going by the early coverage of the trial, sounds like the prosecution is cleaning up so far:

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/b ... 1575738174

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t ... 1449500734

Wonder if they didn't offer Holmes a plea deal or if the plea deal involved too much prison time for Holmes, cuz they seem to have her dead to rights on the fraud charges. Tho in the federal system the difference between a sentence via plea and a sentence via trial conviction tends to be a narrower gap than in state criminal proceedings, as it's all guideline based in the federal system.

I don't think Holmes has any sort of viable defense. The abuse angle is likely to cook her more with the jury than if she skipped it; which the defense's opening statement only hinted at the abuse defense, so they might be waiting to see how things are going before deciding on bs'ing the jury with it. They already had to cancel court b/c a juror got exposed to covid. So a good shot it ends up in a covid mistrial this go 'round.

Mattis has a long history of losing wars. Kissinger only lost the one, afaik. But it was a doozy.

One of the main whistleblowers against Theranos was Sec of State George Shultz's grandson. Shultz sided with Holmes over his grandson when the grandson first dimed out Theranos to the WSJ.

If my life's "schedule" allowed it, I think it would be a fun way to spend a month or two, but I would need a legit RV with some comforts. I'm not doing it in white work van with a crappy mattress pad in back.

Regardless of politics, I've literally never met one person who served under Mattis that didn’t love him. Trump said not to like him so MANY who know very little about him fall in line.

I think if I ever went through an ugly divorce or something and found myself alone trying to sort things out and hit the reset button I could take a long road trip like that by myself. I don't think I could do it with another person, including my wife. I love her very much, but she would agree that a trip like that would be an unmitigated disaster if we attempted it together. I dont think it would end in murder but I would probably be sleeping with one eye open by the back half of the trip.
