My mom didn't understand why anyone would go on vacation in order to stay at a hotel that wasn't nicer than their home. A night on the road at a Hampton Inn, sure. But four or five nights in a city? Oh hell no.

waking up on top of a mountain and watching the sunrise lighting up the surrounding hills is best experienced--sometimes only experienced--by spending the night on the mountain/out in the woods the night before.

We tent-camped our way to Alaska, one place in Canada might actually have been in the median of the highway. We planned to spend the summer in the tent, until we got robbed while at work and they stole our alarm clock and stove. That lead to us renting a mobile home for the next two months. If you can't cook food or wake up on time for work, life is really tough. The fish cannery where we worked had facilities for employees to camp right in the parking lot, but F that!
