I went home and watched this special last night after reading this thread, just as I did for his earlier Netflix specials. I really like his honesty, I like his presence on stage, the way he interacts with the crowd, his willingness to go places where others would shy away from. After watching this special I really can't see where all the hand-wringing is coming from, i think I expected it to be more offensive than it turned out to be, if Netflix pulled that special under pressure it would be pretty disappointing. The thing about Chapelle that keeps me from proclaiming him as the "GOAT" or even close to that level is that frankly, his sets don't make me laugh enough. I go into his specials WANTING to laugh more than I actually do. I don't think he sucks and I don't need him to go all Henny Youngman with a joke every 5 seconds, but I feel like Chapelle is less interested in actually making me laugh and more interested in making his sensitive audience members gasp and look at each other and say "did he REALLY say that?" (at least in these recent specials i've watched).

That is one of those gems that just amplifies the set.

It was a political rant. His larger point isn't exclusive to the LGBTQ community though. More than ever, we are a nation of tribes. If you offend or attack MY tribe, I must cry like a baby and try to ruin your life. If you publicly disagree with YOUR tribe, you're considered self-loathing and you probably should have your bowels ripped out.

Very good take. Everyone so anxious to slobber his knob because anything he says MUST be great . Like his SNL monologue was tepid at best but my god you think he’d just written and read the Gettysburg Address. Not everything Carlin , Pryor, performed was awesome either . They do have not so great bits and moments . Chapelle is certainly no exception .

Chappelle and Burr have both become unfunny in their specials. They aren't just writing jokes anymore. They are trying try to be edgy, but they really aren't. The stuff Chappelle said during this special wasn't even slightly offensive, and it also wasn't funny. They need to just go back to writing jokes and not care who gets offended by them. That's comedy. It's almost like everyone forgot how to do it.

to be fair, they - and basically all of their profession - is being put in a position to not only defend their work, but now also themselves and that it must now have a "purpose" or meaning driven behind it. So, even though it wasnt his funniest special, it was poignant in that he took a position and pushed back on this nonsense in the form of a comedy special with some entertaining rants highlighting (or attempting to) highlight the nonsense

Chappelle tried to have it both ways. He spent about 40 minutes giving a political rant, and 15 minutes explaining why he shouldn't be canceled. About 5 minutes was reserved for jokes. Netflix will still offer him $100M in a couple of years.

They’ve hit on the grift where they “joke” about some controversial topic with C-level material and get the people who make fun of people who say “she is brave” to say “he is brave.” I don't think there’s anything wrong with pushing boundaries and defending stand-up from whatever culture, it’s important, just don’t force it or forget to be funny.

Yes, the Adam Carolla Model. Why go out on the road working on material and tightening up a routine when you can just do an improvised rant about what's pissing you off and call it stand-up?

It's easier to do when you don't actually have to tour.

Nothing Chappelle has done in the past few years has come close to being as funny as stuff he did twenty years ago. Young Dave Chappelle was one of the funniest who ever lived. Older Dave Chappelle is average to above average.
