Halfway through.

This is some exceptional world building.

Not knowing anything about the novel or previous movie I really enjoyed this film.

How’s Mamoa? I’m generally not a fan of his acting (aside from GoT, where speaking a made up language benefited his skill set).

But I’ll watch this. Just trying to set expectations.

Really want to see this and we have HBO here.

But would you say it's better to see on the big screen?

Went ahead and turned it on. Half way through and it's so far fantastic.

When I was employed at the corporate office of that one Milwaukee Motorcycle Manufacturer, they had Mamoa there and it was embarrassing to see so many 40+ grown ass adults wetting their pants.

I honestly had no idea who he was.

i thought this was handled exceptionally well. the visuals are certainly stunning, knowing villenueve could easily pull that off. but the storytelling was equally as compelling (unlike "blade runner", which ran on thinner source material). i usually don't like comparisons like "this is the new 'lord of the rings'!" but this time it's a little more appropriate. the tone, atmosphere, and complete feeling of composition brings it to life fully, just like that series did.

i already knew this was going to be split up into 2 parts, splitting the book. but unlike when they did this with "deathly hallows" in the harry potter series, this film was not meandering and there were no dead spots that didn't go anywhere. there was a purpose for every scene, and it was always moving toward the inevitable: paul was going to join the fremen.

hopefully he can pull this whole thing off and we have, finally, a truly cinematic masterpiece to complement the book.

what if you didn't read the book or see the first movie? I see it is getting a good score on RT, but looking at the actual reviews it sounds like this is a pretty boring movie.

it's going to depend on your attention span. i've seen people on this board complain that LOTR was boring. so if you're not into big scale epics, that has a lot to pay attention to...skip it. this doesn't transcend that.

Should I watch this with subtitles?

This was very good. I wish I watched it in the theaters but then again I like the comfort of our couch as well.

Pretty much follows the story and I like how it'll be 3 movies. The ending of this movie is a bit anti-climatic but it's setting itself up for the next one.

I have one question - in the books : why did they ban conventional interstellar travel? thus being dependent on Dune.

If you saw the first one it's a much better made version. It looks great. The acting is better, and the story isn't crammed. After watching this though I have to say that it's the source material that might the underlying issue. Flying though space requires spice. They have force fields, spaceships, and all other sorts of technology but fight wars with knives and swords.

the 1984 one? Ya I saw it like 30 years ago but I thought it was way too rushed and crammed in. I did not know anything about Dune entering that movie so it was so confusing. Then I read the books and saw it like 10 years after and sort of got it.

I think this version does a good job taking it's time and setting up the story and history. I think the 1984 one assumed the auidence all read the book and knew what was going on coming in.

I must say I still like how the 84 version looks special effects. It was way ahead of it's time.

I thought it was very good not knowing a thing about it and not having seen the original. It was paced well and as W_Z mentioned, it’s a visually beautiful film. Would have been nice for them to have the second half in production or in the can for a summer release. Could be years before we get any news of the sequel.

We should know if there is going to be a part 2 in the next few weeks.

Production would probably start next year whenever the actor’s schedules align, and then we get to see the film maybe during the summer of 2023.

Hopefully.

Hey, remember when reading a book was a complaint because a movie is faster?

The soundtrack is one thing the original had. Plus young Virginia Madsen. Zendaya looks like a dude in this one.

Completely enjoyed this. Great epic pacing. Visuals and sound were great. We’ll cast and acted. Can’t wait for the next one but yeah I will have to

Great first half of a movie. Now we wait 2 years to see the actual movie.

LOTR sucked.

It's like watching a marathon where everybody walked 10 consecutive marathons.
