Stagg Jr is all over the secondary boards now. I've not liked it before but should give another shot.

Just lucked into a Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered. The Small Batch is very good.

I’d be willing to try this, it could turn me on to bourbon (I’m a Scotch whisky guy).

I almost pulled the trigger on a SMUCUF and a Eagle store pick the other day on a secondary board. Trying to be smart and save for Pappy season though.

I was less than impressed with it. When I was there in the fall of 17, I met more than one person who had flown in from New York, that's a serious waste of a flight. If you're looking for an extended weekend trip from Chicago, okay, but if I'm taking a flight somewhere, there are many better destinations.

I wanted to check it out as a trip. What did you dislike about it?

It's the functional equivalent of St. Louis or Memphis, kind of dirty and run down. If you're looking for a cool urban experience, it's not the place to go. There is bourbon, but there are plenty of places to drink bourbon in this world. The most memorable things about it were Mammoth Cave and Churchill Downs. It's not awful for a long weekend road trip, but you can take a flight to much cooler and interesting places.

Makes sense. I wanted to checkout the Louisville Slugger factory and some of the bourbon bars before heading out the bourbon trail for a few days. Downtown St. Louis at night is depressing. It's dead and empty.

It's almost here. I have grown tired of the chase and end up trading samples with friends for Pappy and the like. If you aren't a buddy with someone, it's impossible to get at cost.

Stopped at a non-regular place for bourbon and had to settle Maker's Mark 46
Enjoyable, nowhere near as good as Woodford Reserve Double Baked

A local distiller has a barrel program opportunity this winter. For $900 you get to help fill a personal barrel with Rye, then come back and sample it over the next 4-8 years...then receive 12 engraved bottles and the barrel it was aged in. Seems like a pretty cool opportunity.

Its my current favorite. So, the barrels are aged at sea so they're constantly churned rather than turned once every couple months. It might be a gimmick but it comes out smooth.
Now, not a lot of people like the Wheated Bourbon, but if you do try that one. It's fantastic.
Ocean Voyage averages around 75 bucks and the wheated maybe 90.
Jefferson has a regular Bourbon. But you want the ocean voyage variety.

Neat program - who is the producer? How large of a barrel (Guessing 10 gallon)? I did a private barrel with a bourbon group - it was something like 250 per person, 10 of us and we got 3 bottles. It was with a producer out of Kansas (Boot Hill)

Two different profiles. Makers is wheated and the 46 comes from the additional time under the staves to add in some oakiness where Woodford Double Oaked is a corn/rye blend - but the additional aging in the second barrel is what really makes this shine.

I love Makers but Double Oaked is a great everyday sipper.

Rush Creek Distilling out of Harvard. My wife's cousin is friends with the distiller.

My understanding is they take the barrels down the Mississippi to the Gulf and then down around Florida and back up to New England. Something about the rocking mellows the bourbon. I've heard they've side by side tested and there's a noticeable difference.

sloshing increases reaction with wood supposedly. I remember reading about it years ago and it sounded like an interesting concept. Have not had any of it though. Organic inspector was touting heritage corn bourbons the other day. Years ago I was at a distillery and they had some aging, Bloody Butcher corn. Only reason it caught my eye is we've grown it and it makes a terrific corn meal. I can't imagine it making much difference in flavor but as long as its not too expensive I'll buy a bottle. Worse case it gets turned into a cocktail whisky.
