Yes. Everybody knows it. Will get nothing of value for him. If it wasn't the Cubs, they would cut him.loose.

They will get something. Several teams at the edge of an the playoffs need a closer and would rather pay for one year of Kimbrel than sign him as a FA.

They should be able to get a AA starter for him.

What do you want back for him? Kelenic?

He was an insurance policy against Hendricks getting hurt after the trade deadline. No reason not to pick up a minor league piece or two for him, as opposed to just passing on the option because you are pissed at Kenny Williams.

The Kopech news is welcome. I assume that means they're moving on from Keuchel. However, it might also portend things for Rodon as well.

He was brought in to win the world series not as an insurance policy. You don't trade your second baseman for the next 6 years for an insurance policy.

True, but it was a big price for "insurance", don't you think? No, there were fairly large expectations.

It's assumed there won't be much to get in a trade, so you go again with him. He didn't help us this year, maybe he will next year.

I can’t imagine anybody paying $18m for one year of Carlos Rodon.

I really think we will be taking a step back next year. This is not predicated on not offering a QO to Rodon. The whole Kimbrel thing is going to turn into a disaster. I would be money they retain money in the deal which will count against their budget. We are gonna end up with a platoon in RF and a rookie at 2B.

Plus they declined the option on his replacement they traded for.

Madrigal may end up being useless, but Kimbrel and Hernandez both made the Sox worse in a year they had a shot to win.

What's the argument against making the QO?

He probably wouldn't sign it, and you'd get a draft pick when he signs somewhere else right?

That nobody’s going to give him that much $ and if he does the ‘bet on myself’ thing, you’re giving a $15m raise to a guy who can’t stay healthy.

It’s definitely preferable to be a fan of a team that cries poor and sells off its best players when they are still (mostly) in their prime.

If the worst that happens is you get a solid 3 for $18m for a year, I think you take that gamble.

Not my money so I don’t care - and I like Rodon - but he’s not a solid 3. He’s a potential 1/2 or a rehabbing long reliever without much in between.

The Sox trying to unload Kimbrel to a sucker to save face after overpaying for him is the only scenario a team would pick up his '22 bad money contract.

I tend to agree. If he takes it, you're only on the hook for one year. I have to assume they either want to bring in someone from outside the organization or they're assuming they can sign him for two years at 18 million, instead of just one. I hope they're not planning on moving Crochet into the rotation. Cease, Kopech, and Crochet would be too many young guys for a contending team.

They should have offered him the QO. It's a 1 year deal. This team has some significant questions heading into next year in their rotation with Keuchel coming off a bad season and Kopech not having started for a full season (and struggling in the 2nd half). Giolito, Lynn and Cease are good, but the backend of that rotation is at least a question. If they kept Rodon around, they would need to manage his innings, but would have been a nice piece to help keep this rotation deeper and add to the over depth.

It feels like they are operating within a tight budget and need to make counter-acting type moves so they don't add salary beyond some point.
