Where we differ is I think the pick is wrong in and of itself just because it didn't help Rodgers. For me, when I have a HOF QB, I need to maximize our chances of winning while he's still around. It's sort of like wanting to cut bait with (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky because his ineptitude was wasting the championship-level defense we had. Get him out and get someone in who can do enough to let us ride the defense to glory. With GB, it's like holy shit we're in it every year because of this guy, what can I do with this pick to make sure he has what he needs to get us to the SB.
Like give me someone who can plug the holes we have on d, or someone who can make Rodgers even more potent (double down on your strengths if you can't improve your weakness), so we can really capitalize on having Rodgers and cash in at the end of the year. By investing in Love it's like they're distracted by the future when the present isn't even close to being finished yet. It's like drafting Jordan's replacement after the 4th ring instead of signing Brian Williams/Bison Dele to go after a 5th and 6th. You all needed a Bison Dele and who knows what would have happened against TB had you had Bison Dele on the field in whatever position and not someone holding a clipboard.
You can both draft and sign players. They could fill immediate needs through free agency or trades. However - in most cases- you can’t replace a HOF QB unless you acquire another one through the draft. They didn’t want to go through the usual downfall when Rodgers left (or dropped off) so they were proactive. Clearly if Love is a good player it will be viewed as a smart pick. If he sucks then it will have been a waste. We just don’t know yet.
Agree to disagree, friend. For me it's always going to be a failed pick because it didn't accentuate what you have in Rogers in 2019/2020/2021. When a SB opportunity is right in front of you, do what it takes to capitalize - don't worry about 2023, 2024, 2025, etc., when there's a real possibility you can win now and for the next few years. Missed opportunity in my book no matter how Love turns out.
