when beto talks he seems like the awkward inventor who has mapped out his entire spiel to Shark Tank. and read somewhere that arm movements are really important and is a bit overzealous on that tip.

when some of you speculate who the 24 nominee will be, remember how well thought of he was, until he wasn't

the political landscape shifts quickly

Beta is the (presumably) hetero version of 2% Pete Buttigieg. Highly articulate, totally vacuous.

If people like those two--along with Kamala Harris--are the future of the Democratic Party, then the Democratic Party has no future.

Completely agree TM, but what better options do they have?

Is there a 45 yr old Bernie somewhere around?

I am not sure of the science behind a man being gay. But in Pete’s case, I have to figure that his last name was a big part in him choosing to love men.

Not sure where these ads are. I watch a fair amount of the local TV networks and I haven't seen one ad from Abbott or anyone else for that matter on TV. Maybe they are web only ads?

Beto won't win. But he'll prevent the race from being embarrassing.

Hmm...Haven't seen those ads. Must be web only. Anyway, agree that he won't win.

It's quite the strategy in TX.

It's quite the strategy in TX.

Eventually there will be enough people who fled California living in TX that they’ll be able to remake Texas in the image of the place they fled.

It'll be awhile. Texas has a lot of folks not in Austin, Houston (although most people I know here are pro gun), Dallas, El Paso. Well, I'll be gone from here by the time that happens. :D

His formal announcement focused on a working electricity grid, jobs, schools, and legalizing weed.

That'll keep him within 5 points.

The first three, ok, makes sense. No way he can get weed legalized. The liquor stores are closed here on Sunday and the grocery stores don't allow spirit sales on Sunday. If liquor sales is an issue here, legalizing weed is a bigger one.

I don't know. If things keep going how they are it might not be so close. I think a lot of his success last time was because of Trump hate.

Abbott has been protecting his right flank and indulging hard(er) right factions. It'll give Beto a small opening to keep the election from being a destruction. Instead it'll just be a normal loss.

I hear that all the time, but don’t you think the fleeing folks are probably right of center on balance or at least evenly split.?

The two most similar states in the Union demographically are California and Texas. If zero people ever "flee" California to Texas over the next 20 years the die is already cast demographically, it's who appeals to the changing demographics that will determine where Texas lands politically. The largest difference between California and Texas at this point is voter turnout. 65% of registered Texas voters turned out to vote in 2020. 80% of registered California voters turned out to vote in 2020. Any statistical data on elections shows that the lack of registered voter participation largely skews towards younger and minority voters. It can be your supposition where the majority of those voters likely would have been voting.

Also, the general consensus in the media is that there is some electoral counter balance between California and Texas. Biden received 11MM votes in California to Trump's 6MM. In Texas it was Trump 5.8MM to 5.2MM for Biden. California isn't even a contest.

In Texas you had 11MM votes cast @ a 65% turnout. If you get to California turnout in Texas (80%) that's 2.5MM more votes, if 60% of those young, minority, and young/minority voters break for Biden, you're in a dead heat. 100% of the voters who didn't vote in California could have voted for Trump and Biden still cleans up in California.

Finally, from (essentially) the Civil War through 1988 California was one of the most consistently republican states. They put 4 terms of presidents in the white house in a 16 year period. The fact that that has changes had nothing to do with people "fleeing" democratic states to go to California to remake it, it had everything to do with a changing electorate. It's like Mark Twain said about bankruptcy, things happen slowly and then all the sudden.

Before we went all-in on the service economy, Southern California owed a lot of its economy to aerospace, military, and agriculture. Go look at old pictures of Anaheim Stadium when it was surrounded by farmland as far as the eye could see. Orange County didn't go Democratic until 2016. San Diego still elects Republican mayors.

The state that has been the most reliably Democratic through the years is Minnesota, and it was only thanks to Gary Johnson that Hillary wasn't the first Democrat in ages to lose it.

i know next to nothing about this guy other than he has a weird name.... but i'd be REALLY interested to see how many gun control laws he sponsored or took up. If he has a history of advocating for this cause... then fine, interrrupt the presser because it's your cause...

I have a feeling he and his team focus grouped then practiced that outburst weeks beforehand.

While I agree, he has way more of a flock of followers than John Kerry. Maybe that's because (as Curious Hair once mentioned) there's TV footage of Beto long-boarding through a Whattaburger parking lot
