Maybe a weed burner style would but those are no no’s. The only time I ever hear the fence is if there is some arcing going on and that’s a snapping noice every second or so. We have a lot of fence on the farm and it’s a constant hunt for shorts in fence. Our second year here we had a cow get caught in a fence. Our partners at time had never seen anything like it. You’ll respect the fence a bit after that. Had an overhead snap once too during a storm. That was a fun home butchering.

Yeah, we probably weren't working with cutting-edge technology back in the day.

The weed burners were constant on. The new ones have to pulse so you can break contact. I think there are few other differences as well with old to new ones. I barely remember the one the neighboring dairy farm that was my neighbor growing up. I think the cows were gone by 1985 and only really remember Holsteins in our yard through stories I think so it might of been a very rare occurrence for them to be out in thst field. I do remember the fence being hot.

We never had a constant hot fencer that I remember, the International is from 1973 or 4, it has the mechanical switch to cycle the pulse and a huge transformer to build the voltage up, I think it's 20kV. A big capacitor in there as well. One of the diodes installed right after the power cord popped on it the last time I powered the whole place with a generator. Apparently, this diode is there to blow in case of an over-voltage condition, and the generator was a little high as i had removed all the other loads before starting it. I replaced that diode and it works fine again. Meanwhile, I had run to TSC and bought the least expensive 120V charger they had, and it hits just about as hard, but all solid state electronics now. I typically measure 8.5-9.0 kV at the end of the fence line, a little less when we power the easternmost pasture. It just feels safer to have on 24/7 inside building with a hundred of tons of dry grass one floor above.

I've mistakenly touched the 120vac while working on a guitar amp....multiple times. It's enough to make you jump and freak out a little bit.
