As much as I would like the Sox to get a 2B and another SP, I have to agree with this.

2B and SP are going off the board left and right. Jon Gray just took a 4yr 56M contract. That was 100% in the Sox price range. By the time this resolves, there is going to be nothing of value left.

The "lockout" starts Wednesday.

I don't believe the cupboards will be stripped bare over the next 36 hours.

I do like the indication that they will let the combination of Vaughn/Sheets/Engel play RF. They made Vaughn carry an insanely heavy load for a rookie last year. I think he held up relatively well but hit a rookie wall hard. I'm expecting a breakout from him

Did we forget about Colas? If he's anything close to what he's been advertised as, he's the rightfielder.

If they sign him, that is another 2-3yr window before he comes up. I just hope Sheets improves. I still think they are gonna use Vaughn or Sheets in a deal to land a SP.

The Twins gave Buxton $100 million. He's never healthy. Crazy numbers being thrown out there.

Hey fans moan about bad contracts all the time because they hamstring organizations especially with a competitive balance tax. See Heyward. It is about getting players that you need at prices that you can afford without sacrificing your ability to sign or trade for players and take on salary after injuries or poor performances by your existing roster.

That team won a WS, ours for the first time in history made the playoffs back to back years and got bounced in the first round.

Apples and oranges.

THe contracts are going to be crazy on the other side of the agreement as well.

Céspedes is a better prospect than him, and is probably another year or so away. Colas if signed is probably about 2-3 years away. The question becomes, are we ok with Sheets in LF and Vaughn in RF for the time being? This team has too many DHs at the moment for Vaughn or Sheets to play 1B.

Absolutely not. Colas is supposed to be big league ready.

John Paul Morosi thinks Chris Taylor would be a good fit for the Sox. Looks like he would be an upgrade at 2nd with the potential to play some outfield as well. The strikeouts are a bit concerning but that doesn't seem to matter to Hahn.

I'm pretty sure he played in the Pacific League which is the highest level over there. For whatever that's worth. Not a big body of work there either.

If Avisail Garcia is getting signed for $13 million a year, they're going to have no choice but to spend if they want anyone of substance. If they don't, they better be aggressively trying to extend guys like Giolito and Moncada.

Uncle Jeery doesn’t spend money for spending’s sake.

If a good 2Bman costs $15m, the Sox will do without.

They need to add at bat at 2nd or RF and a starter at the least. They don't really have a DH either. So it's more than money saving extensions that Hahn specializes in. Those only matter if you spend to go over the top.

With all due respect, you're both greatly overrating where these guys are at now and how good they will ever be. Cespedes is basically a non prospect at this point. He's performed poorly while being older than the competition. He had an awful showing in the AFL. Not close to being ready, if he ever will be. Everything from his numbers to his opinion from scouts is low.

Colas hasn't played in any type of professional league since 2019. It'll be 2022 once he plays professional ball again. That gap isn't good at all for his development. Fangraphs isn't very high on him. Has him as a 40 Future Value, which is basically a mid-tier prospect in an organization. He still has a chance to make it, buts he's basically an unknown currently.
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/05/ ... colas.html

Regardless, neither are close.to being ready, and it's not guaranteed they'll ever even be major leaguers.

I agree the gaps in his actual playing could be an issue. But if you're going to cite the age of guys they've played against, a couple years ago Colas put up giant numbers in a league where he was one of the younger guys. Again, a pretty short sample though. The Cuban National Series isn't some joke league. He put up strong numbers there as a 17 year old. Strong even if you think he was a couple years older. I suspect you will be surprised at how good he actually is.

In that cavernous ballpark, he is going to be posing and bat flipping for a lot of doubles and long fly outs.

That's fine as long as he remains a utility guy. If he's targeted as the starter then Hahn has back-slid.
