It’s also lightened my thoughts on Lennon. Obviously no one should be gunned down senselessly but I always thought he was more caustic in the breakup. I don’t see it.

what was happening then is the Eastman's (Paul's wife's family) where trying to push Paul as the Beatles. Make him the one and only front man. Sort of like when you think of the Stones you think of Mick first. The other 3 guys hated this.

And in the doc, you can clearly read Faul's mind thinking 'fuck these guys. i'm the best one here. i'm going solo or start my own band.' that's what faul was fed by his wife and her family and he was ready to leave.

Totally 100 percent. I read a few years ago McCartney was worried that this new generation and ones to come have no idea who the Beatles were and really don't care. They're headed to the way of the historical dustbin.

Ironically what Paul and his research staff found what young ppl were by far and only interested in about the Beatles : Paul is Dead conspiracy theory! the irony!

I noticed during the credits of Episode 1 that the songs showed "Lennon-McCartney" as the songwriters, which it has been since the beginning (except for the few Harrison songs or the ones where all four co-wrote). I thought Paul was trying to change the songs where he was the predominant writer to "McCartney-Lennon" but maybe that hasn't happened, at least for this documentary.

Finished Ep. 1 and started Ep. 2.

My wife made it about 20 minutes, she appreciated seeing them work through songs to a point, but couldn't handle it any longer.

I'm the furthest thing from a Beatles nut, but certainly appreciate their place in music history and acknowledge their greatness. Certainly not for everyone, but I am loving every single moment of this series. Watching them work...as painful as it can be is fascinating to me.

The way George quit the band is just hysterical. The dry-banter between Paul and John. I can't wait to watch the rest of it, but I'll be doing that solo.

It’s weird the shit Ringo gets, as if being the least talented Beatle wouldn’t still put you in the 99th percentile of musicians.

Ringo's son, Zak Starkey, is a thousand times the drummer that his father is/was on his best day.

My wife pointed me to his Wikipedia page which I found pretty interesting..... Guy is currently worth $350 million

At the age of six, Starkey developed appendicitis. Following a routine appendectomy he contracted peritonitis, causing him to fall into a coma that lasted days. His recovery spanned twelve months, which he spent away from his family at Liverpool's Myrtle Street children's hospital. Upon his discharge in May 1948, his mother allowed him to stay home, causing him to miss school. At age eight, he remained illiterate, with a poor grasp of mathematics. His lack of education contributed to a feeling of alienation at school, which resulted in his regularly playing truant at Sefton Park. After several years of twice-weekly tutoring from his surrogate sister and neighbour, Marie Maguire Crawford, Starkey had nearly caught up to his peers academically, but in 1953, he contracted tuberculosis and was admitted to a sanatorium, where he remained for two years. During his stay the medical staff made an effort to stimulate motor activity and relieve boredom by encouraging their patients to join the hospital band, leading to his first exposure to a percussion instrument: a makeshift mallet made from a cotton bobbin that he used to strike the cabinets next to his bed. Soon afterwards, he grew increasingly interested in drumming, receiving a copy of the Alyn Ainsworth song "Bedtime for Drums" as a convalescence gift from Crawford. Starkey commented: "I was in the hospital band ... That's where I really started playing. I never wanted anything else from there on ... My grandparents gave me a mandolin and a banjo, but I didn't want them. My grandfather gave me a harmonica ... we had a piano – nothing. Only the drums."

Starkey attended St Silas, a Church of England primary school near his house where his classmates nicknamed him "Lazarus", and later Dingle Vale Secondary modern school, where he showed an aptitude for art and drama, as well as practical subjects including mechanics. As a result of the prolonged hospitalisations, he fell behind his peers scholastically and was ineligible for the 11-plus qualifying examination required for attendance at a grammar school. On 17 April 1954, Starkey's mother married Harry Graves at the register office on Mount Pleasant, Liverpool. He was an ex-Londoner who had moved to Liverpool following the failure of his first marriage. Graves, an impassioned fan of big band music and their vocalists, introduced Starkey to recordings by Dinah Shore, Sarah Vaughan and Billy Daniels. Graves stated that he and "Ritchie" never had an unpleasant exchange between them; Starkey later commented: "He was great ... I learned gentleness from Harry." After the extended hospital stay following Starkey's recovery from tuberculosis, he did not return to school, preferring instead to stay at home and listen to music while playing along by beating biscuit tins with sticks.

Yeah, that's where I am with them. I guess what bugs me is the prevailing Boomer opinion that they are the "G.O.A.T." and to even question such is absurd. It's sort of like challenging Jordan being the "G.O.A.T." in Chicago.

Are Lennon and McCartney really better pop songwriters than Goffin-King or Bacharach-David? I don't think so. And the Beatles covered a bunch of Larry Williams songs. Did Larry ever cover the Beatles?

this is true. like or hate them, this is undeinable they were musical genius. What's more incredible is they didnt know how to read music when they started. that's why they 'broke' all the rules when it comes to playing and why the sound was so unique at that time.

Also, there was a story I vaguely remember about how they were on show concert or award show with the rolling stones early on. The stones were a song short and the Beatles were like no big deal, we'll write something for you. they wrote the song in literally 5 min and gave it to the stones. It was a huge hit . I think it was 'I wanna be your man'. Anyway, i'm getting too old to remember the details but you get the jist of it.

Even in this doc, you can see how they were like a song machine. producing high quality songs.

found the story on the internet wikipedia :

Quote:
According to various accounts, either the Rolling Stones' manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham or the Rolling Stones themselves ran into Lennon and McCartney on the street as the two were returning from an awards luncheon. Hearing that the band were in need of material for a single, Lennon and McCartney went to their session at De Lane Lea Studio and finished off the song – whose verse they had already been working on – in the corner of the room while the impressed Rolling Stones watched.

Mick Jagger recalled the song in 1968:[4]

We knew [the Beatles] by then and we were rehearsing and Andrew brought Paul and John down to the rehearsal. They said they had this tune, they were really hustlers then. I mean the way they used to hustle tunes was great: 'Hey Mick, we've got this great song.' So they played it and we thought it sounded pretty commercial, which is what we were looking for, so we did it like Elmore James or something. I haven't heard it for ages but it must be pretty freaky 'cause nobody really produced it. It was completely crackers, but it was a hit and sounded great onstage.

McCartney stated in 2016:[5]

We were friends with them, and I just thought "I Wanna Be Your Man" would be good for them. I knew they did Bo Diddley stuff. And they made a good job of it.

Bill Wyman noted how the Rolling Stones adapted the song to their style:

We kind of learned it pretty quickly 'cause there wasn't that much to learn. Then Brian got his slide out, his steel (guitar) out and dadaw ... dadaw ... and we said, 'Yeah, that's better, dirty it up a bit and bash it out', and we kind of completely turned the song around and made it much more tough, Stones- and Elmore James-like.

The Beatles are much bigger than their music. They are a cultural force turned Greek tragedy complete with a public execution of the most talented member. This was bound to skew their memory, and the perception of their influence.

That's kind of my point. It's because the Boomer Generation is so large. Anything they like is going to have inordinate cultural impact. Just like vaccines that are being forced on the population and the measures that are destroying the future so Boomers don't catch a cold.

McCartney was probably a more talented instrumentalist than Lennon. Although, I think Lennon was a more gifted lyricist, and they were probably similar in terms of vocal ability.

I always thought Lennon’s lyrics were nearly nonsensical with a few exceptional exceptions.

McCartney was the one that hit emotions more frequently.

But McCartney also wrote a lot of silly nursery rhymes.

Maybe there were a couple good psychedelic songs but Kenny Rodgers did that too and his wasn't a Mish mash of mumbo jumbo and weirdo sitar.

I know it's heresy, but to be honest I prefer the peak of Ringo's solo work (It Don't Come Easy, Photograph, You're Sixteen) to Lennon's.

I think they hit their pinnacle with Rubber Soul and Revolver. Sgt. Pepper's seems more like a "look at what we can do" record and I would argue it doesn't have songs like the two I mentioned. I've played those records until I got tired when I was much younger. (Okay, Boomer.) I don't really need to hear them again. At this point, pretty much the only Beatles songs that I won't PTFB on are "Don't Let Me Down" and "I've Got A Feeling."

In my top 5-10 Beatles songs.

I’ve always assumed they maybe pioneered things? Idk if that’s true, maybe one of the bored elders can opine.

But the love fest seems to go beyond the actual music. It’s kind of like how The Godfather seems predictable & cliche at times but then you have to contextualize that well, it’s not those things and may seem that way because so many others copied the themes in that movie that it became kind of a blueprint for mob movies and in that sense, maybe the influence of the Beatles was so enormous that they may seem like another boyband to those of us who didn’t experience them contemporaneously but in reality they were The Godfather of light rock, poppy boy bands.

They did, but some of that credit goes to George Martin and some of the tech guys like Alan Parsons.

Like JORR said, some of the stuff on Sgt Pepper was experimental just for the sake of being experimental (like having the orchestra start at one note and randomly go up to another note on Day in the Life). To me, that doesn't really do much. I'd rather listen to more straightforward stuff like All My Loving or Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da.

I agree with Rick Beato that Phil Spector ruined the album with his schmaltzy strings, especially on Long and Winding Road. If you listen to the version on "Let It Be - Naked" on Spotify (or even the demo version in Episode 1!), it is far superior.

Jorr is right about Rubber Soul and Revolver. I do love Abbey Road not only for the second half medley but George’s two songs. The End as you all already know was supposed to be the end until Spector.

I'm right there with you. If you're a Gen Xer and you first encountered their music at some point in the 80's or 90's, the love fest doesn't really make any sense. Their music isn't bad, but you've heard other similar things you like better, and you're kind of left shrugging your shoulders.

I think comparing them to something like The Godfather makes sense on the surface of things, but movies are such a different art form from music. The older I get, the more I have become convinced that there is no such thing as objectively good or bad music. What you like musically is too heavily dependent on: your age when your first heard it, what you were doing when you first heard it, who you were with when you first heard it, what your friends thought of it, etc. Movies on the other hand, have more inherent virtue or vice. Citizen Kane is now 80 years old, but when I watched it as a teenager in the 90's I still thought it was a great movie. The Godfather still holds up as a great movie. Even something like Gaslight still holds up. For whatever reason, it's easier to separate movies from their context and just enjoy them or hate them on their own terms.
