I'm not trying to be argumentative here and I'm mostly aligned with you about the undeserved reverence for the Beatles that must not be questioned, but I don't think that's really true. The Stones are much more derivative than the Beatles.

If the Beatles were so good how come they never made a song with The Fat Boys?

"a day in the life" broke brian wilson's brain. we could've actually had "smile" had he not heard that song.

Do you really think "A Day In The Life" is objectively better than "Wouldn't It Be Nice"?

Right off the bat I'd say that if we're talking about the pop music idiom, the former is just too long.

I see "A Day In The Life" as a component of a larger work rather than as a stand alone pop song.

There's something about working within the constraints of 2 minutes 50 seconds.

Spot on.

Yep.

Also, Hey Jude may actually be the biggest auditory abortion known to man. From the moment McCartney starts singing, I can feel myself getting angrier.

One of the things that annoys me about The Beatles is that people count what people did after they were no longer The Beatles. It's like saying the 90s Bulls were great because Phil Jackson won 5 titles with the Lakers.

The Beatles are alright. They are showed up at the right place at the right time and had some talent. They "influenced" a lot of people because of that but it's not like the world would not have the concept of a "music video" if not for them inventing it or that we would be sitting here in 2021 and people would be saying "A band playing in a sports stadium? What a dumb idea. No one would go!".

Come on. There's not a single Beatles song that measures up to this:

I think you're falling into the same trap that you said others were in, who think the Beatles are great because that's what they have been told forever. Do you actually like God Only Knows that much, or are you going by McCartney's alleged statement saying it was the best song ever written?

Yeah, that's where I am with them. I guess what bugs me is the prevailing Boomer opinion that they are the "G.O.A.T." and to even question such is absurd. It's sort of like challenging Jordan being the "G.O.A.T." in Chicago.

Are Lennon and McCartney really better pop songwriters than Goffin-King or Bacharach-David? I don't think so. And the Beatles covered a bunch of Larry Williams songs. Did Larry ever cover the Beatles?

Man get the fuck out of here with this narrative that MJ being the GOAT is Chicago centric. Its a universally accepted fact among NBA fans over the age of 30 nation wide.

And yeah the Beatles are fucking great too. The hype is for a reason

people have been momentarily deluded with Kobe and later Lebron. When they break fandom and make a sober objective and subjective comparison, they see how those guys don't match

Beach Boys are great. Yes Pet Sounds made the Beatles jealous.

Also Ive learned thru the years that the Stones are much bigger in the US than they are in the UK.

they're completely different types of songs. i would compare "surf's up" more to "a day in the life" and the latter is certainly superior despite van dyke parks' best efforts to do the most lyrical gymnastics possible. or, even "good vibrations" is a better comparison because of the fact that it's basically 2 songs in one. that's a tough one to choose between, though, because i love 'em both.

The Beatles have a lot of fluff, but there are two or three songs on the White Album that are better than these.

Rumble- Link Wray
Pipeline & Walk Don't Run- The Ventures

There's you're all time great 'surf' songs.

The Beatles did the Beach Boys better than the Beach Boys.

They have nothing as good as Back In The USSR

I'd rather listen to Wings than the Beatles.

And the only Wings song I don't hate is Maybe I'm Amazed.

Maybe I'm Amazed sucks. Sucks hard. Paul and his elevator muzak.

Best Beach Boys song is "River Song" off Dennis's album. Carl contributed heavily to it. It's a tour de force from the opening piano line to the deep choir at the end. Better than any pocket symphony Brian put together. In fact, like Good Vibrations it could have been two or three separate songs and still sounded complete.

and if you want good surf music, the Rip Chords are a good place to start. Terry Melcher and Brian Johnston. Melcher sounds better than Brian with his voice doubling ability and some of those songs are just tight. Beach Boys without the frills.

Paul's not that good of a drummer.

I'm not going to slag The Beach Boys. I'd fully admit Brian Wilson can hold his own with Lennon/McCartney in songwriting and if you want to say God Only Knows is as good as anything the Beatles did, okay. When you throw in the instruments though The Beatles pull pretty far ahead. I think I've mentioned it one of the frequent Beatles are overrated threads that pop up, but to go from "Please Please Me" and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" in early '63 to the Revolver album (with 5 albums in between) 3 years later blows my mind.

Dude, those harmonies at the end when the whole thing is welling up and Carl comes in like an angel, it makes me weep.

Good thing I didn't say that. The Beatles work being better than anything that the individual members put out later is the least controversial statement ever.

Are you serious? You really don't understand why a bunch of guys achieving a musical accord might be better than each of those guys on his own?
