This is admittedly not my forte. I know Chicago and Louisiana accents and not much else. Costner in JFK is truly awful. Folks in LA dont speak that slowly just to try to get the accent that wrong

costner is legendary for bad accents from the barely british one in "robin hood" to the community theater-level boston accent in "thirteen days". he was better in "the untouchables" because whatever accent he had to achieve was vague enough that it didn't matter.

This is the opposite of the purpose of the thread, but some folks on Succession have thick foreign accents and you'd never know based on how well they adapt an American accent during filming.

Ok, so in Field de Dreams, the redhead wasn't even trying to hide her urban dialect. The other redhead (her brother) was also out of place, but not as bad. Still pisses me off more than Shoeless Joe batting right-handed and sounding like he was from Jersey. If they had Josh Gibson and other Negro Leaguers in the film, I wonder what they would have sounded like. (I suspect their dialects would have been overdone and stereotyped.)

With all this wokeness, I am almost surprised that they have not put CGI Negro Leaguers in the background. Maybe put that Babe Didrickson chick in there, too, plus Ichiro's grandpa or something. That would be cool if you could pay like $50 and They could put you in any movie. Like sitting next to Sharon Stone or leaning up against Chuck Heston when he got all those commandments or just chilling with the guy from Eraserhead.

I always thought Pesci didn't get enough credit for his Chicago accent in Casino. It slipped at times, but at MANY points in the film (Asking of Ace "What's the line on that Bear game?" comes to mind) he nails it.

De Niro, of course, didn't give much of a fuck and just did De Niro while playing a guy who grew up in Chicago during the 40's.

Those are two great points. You are right about Pesci.

I've mentioned how Sipowicz had the worst New York accent ever--even the guy who basically invented sociolinguistics said so. But filmmakers will take that general urban accent and use it in many large Northern cities. DeNiro doesn't care.

One thing that really bugs me is when someone with an almost stereotypical New York or New York Jewish accent shows up anywhere else (except maybe California, which is different because of migration). Examples: Any tv show before 2010.

I have no idea if Jack Nicholson's accent in Hoffa was good or not, but it was annoying. He deserves to be under Giant Stadium, too.
