That’s because they’re such distinctive accents. If you get them right they’re not terribly notable. But they’re more noticeable when they’re bad. And when they’re bad they can ruin a whole film.

Thirteen Days is a decent movie about the Cuban Missle Crisis. I actually enjoy it quite a bit.

The real Jim Garrison was in the movie and didn't have too noticeable an accent.

He was passable for 6 seasons and then just routinely slipped out of it in season 7 as he stopped caring.

Opposite of this is Dominic West as McNulty in The Wire. Slipped a ton season 1 and then just was great from 2-5 and never slipped once after that.

Matt Nagy has a thick Philadelphia accent and that as much as anything else helps him register to the world as a complete dullard. Boston is the worst, though.

Truth. It’s why there’s no such thing as a ‘good’ Boston accent. Best case, you nail it and people are annoyed watching a character that’s obviously a dumbass. And when it gets fucked up - think Nicholson in The Departed - you have a person struggling to sound like a dumbass.

He’s in & out most the movie. He hits words like bar (“bahh”) but otherwise mixes in normal Jack and what sounds like some type of NY thing.

One of my favorite scenes involving an accent is Brad Pitt's character in Inglorius Basterds trying to pass as Italian in the theater at the end of the movie. His southern drawl Italian to Hans Landa always makes me laugh, particularly his "arrivederci".

I’ve watched that 40 second clip probably 50 times since last night. It’s amazing.
