Given that the Turks occupied Greece for roughly 400 years, and routinely took slaves back to Turkey (one of my direct ancestors was one, who was repurchased and freed as a young adult), Kanter is using precisely the correct meaning of the word.

What else do you call forced labor other than slavery?

Slavery is a loaded term and implies ownership of a person by another. Forced labor is similar to what prisoners endure, which is closer to the reality in parts of China.

I am just not crazy about a white guy, and non American to boot, using a term that is politically fraught in the U.S. i am as far from woke as one can be. I am not offended or anything, but I would not want to walk into an NBA locker room after having Tweeted something using the word against a black guy.

What you're referring to is chattel slavery. It isn't the only type of slavery that did or still does exist. What is happening in China meets all definitions of slavery while not being chattel slavery.

I mean… Should he though?

The term sees pretty spot on when you look into what’s happening to the Uighurs.

I do not think white folk should use that word against a black person even though it may be accurate. Maybe “forced” or “no wage/low wage” would be more appropriate.

What?

"Freedom" is a word that holds a lot of meaning when you're a refugee. Sure he is a very wealthy refugee, but he still is technically a refugee who cannot return to his home country.

This name change wasn't a spur of the moment thing. He said he was going to do it 2 years ago when he was in the midst of this process and after he was barred from returning to his homeland.

like many turks born in germany, switzerland, the netherlands...the religious and cultural differences, along with childhood lessons of turkish nationalism will always have them longing to be 'turkish'.

this is no different, kanter was born in switzerland and his family moved back to turkey. his nation pulls every nationalistic lever - from absurd pseudoscience and pseudohistory to weaponizing islam for turkey's geopolitical aspirations.

kudos to kanter for rejecting erdogan's vision of turkey. bigger kudos to the usa, which is called a racist, anti-islamic nation by it's own citizens, for taking kanter in.

Yep, Enes came from a family that provided him with an education so his view on the world and vision would not clash with the Islamism and Nationalism that Erdogan has used to cling to power for 20 years now. Things in Turkey could get extremely rough in the coming year as their currency has collapsed against the dollar over the last few months. Unfortunately, Erdogan has already used the tools of the state to lock up much of his opposition. He'll probably weaponize the millions of Syrians within their borders to pressure the EU to bail him out. He played that card a few years ago successfully.

absolutely, no doubt.

he's doing it now. the russians will give him a hand, as he is helping russia keep it's monopoly on european gas. the russians, germans and turks all happy...the french and greeks have a defence pact now. we'll see if greece gets the ok from france to start drilling for gas in it's waters.

Looks like The Libs can fawn over LeBron James again after he busted a guy's face open like a goon! Boy, that was a rough two weeks.

He's mostly going to be doing something terrible, like speaking up against the ongoing genocide of the Uyghur Muslims. What a monster! Now go follow your hero Lebron on Twitter.

I'm still trying to figure out why Enes Kanter(Freedom's) activism is a bad thing or is it the activism you don't like?

Who said it was bad? It’s just been obvious he’s been heading for the conservative grift circuit for a while. Glad he has a post NBA career lined up.

Or he actually cares about the cause and is trying to get the message to as many people that he can who will actually listen. Maybe Nancy Pelosi could learn something from his "grift".

You called his speaking a grift (engage in petty or small-scale swindling). I feel he has always been clear and concise about his message, opposing the abuses of China. Now is Matt Schlaap! a weirdo, absolutely, but you have to take whatever platform you can get. Good look speaking out against China on CNN or MSDNC.

Whatever happens will be better than telling our athletes at the Olympics keep their mouth shut so as to not piss off the Chinese regime.
