On Friday, Oven & Tap's owners threatened to sue Brandt in a cease-in-desist letter in which they claimed she's permanently damaged the restaurant's reputation. People who've never been to the restaurant have since left "countless unwarranted 1 Star Reviews . . . an outpouring of negative reviews, which will undoubtedly impact [the restaurant's business]," attorney Steve Brooks wrote in the cease-and-desist letter. Oven & Tap "has now been cast as a restaurant that treats its employees poorly."

Depends on the tipping policy I guess. Who deviated and by how much? The article mentions 7% of the waiter's paycheck going to the non-server staff but then in another place it says tips are handled on a case by case basis for large parties, so I don't know.

What is the standard practice if the party was four people instead of 32? Whatever they would have done for four perhaps should have been done for 32.

Should have snitched in a more clandestine way. See, this is what happens when society has gone Snitching24/7. No nuance left.

First of all, this is a very nice gesture by LTG in one of his many trips to the great state of Arkansas.

The restaurant can't win in this and should cut their losses, they have lost many good clients already.

Serious question...

While I have worked in the food industry before, I have never been a server nor worked with servers. What is the etiquette when receiving a big tip like this? Is is expected or the 'right thing to do' on the server's end to share some of the tip with the kitchen staff or bartenders, or is it just her lucky day and can pocket the entire thing and feel no shame or remorse?

The restaurant was 100% wrong for firing the server.
The restaurant was wrong but less than 100% wrong for deciding how the tip should be distributed without a standard policy.

The server is correct. I've been to this restaurant more than a few times. Their food and atmosphere are pretty good, but we won't be going back. We have plenty of other options so I won't necessarily miss this place.

The owners are getting roasted here. They had to take down all of their social media for themselves and the restaurant over the backlash.

Is this a huge story down there in Below Kansas?

Nah, this restaurant is in Bentonville (AKA the good part of the state). He wouldn't ever be seen outside of shithole Little Rock.

It's only a story here because it's literally the town I live in.

She shouldn't feel shame. It's not her job to share the tips with anyone.

If it is a written out company policy then the tip should have been taken and distributed accordingly but it sounds as if it was not a company policy to split cash tips.

It wasn't company policy and that's why this has blown up into such an issue. Server had been there for 3 1/2 years and had never once had to share a tip.

To top it off, the party she served had called ahead to the restaurant to ask if they had a policy and were told no. They had intended to give a big tip to the 2 wait staff members who served them.

I won't miss O&T. Tavola is literally a block away and has better brick oven pizza anyways.

Plus it seems like that group wanted the tip to go to that specific server. Restaurant shouldve stayed the fuck out of it.

Also, if I had to speculate on why cash tips aren't split but credit card tips are split, it's split up so the owners can take out credit card fees and not to share with the kitchen staff.

Well now she's got to put it on her taxes so she loses a nice chunk of a cash tip regardless.

A tip like that (and large party tips) should absolutely be shared with your bartenders, barbacks, and bussers. It would be a super nice gesture and really should be sharing with the BOH also. If she gave everybody 100 and walked away with 2200 it would be good all around. Restaurants have varying policies for stuff like that and I can see why. The girl sounds like a little bit of a bitch here.

I don't know if that makes the restaurant right but they were trying to hold staff and business together.

That's what I took from the part where the restaurant actually spent $7,700 extra to pay the support staff.

I also think the tippers themselves created much of the drama by making such a public proclamation. Could've just slipped them cash but they had to be braggadocious.

Yeah maybe, but I can't blame them too much. They were trying to do something nice and make their server who they have a relationship feel good and it's fairly common around the holidays.

If this girl got a $4400 and didn't share it with any of you she'd be all over DBOTW and she should be.

Right, that customer who stopped dinner to make the speech sounds a lot like One Post. I wonder if he was in town to visit Ogie.

I don't disagree, but the server showed up, did her job, and got hosed out of half her tip.

this is the correct motorcycle, regardless of formal policy it's standard for waitstaff to break off some of their cash tips for bartenders, bussers and barbacks/dishwashers even. Not so much for kitchen staff, which is usually compensated at a higher hourly level from the get. and if she wasn't in the habit of doing so, if she planned to continue to work there and rely on those support staff to do her job after publicly getting that sort of tip then breaking off a few 20's at least to each of them seems like a no-brainer. If I recall from brief periods working at restaurants, it wasn't huge chunk of their cash tips; something along the lines of what you tip on a meal, so if a server made 100$ she'd throw at most a 20 on the pile for the boh staff, usually less.

but the real dbags are the customers who didn't allocate enough tip to cover everyone.

That's the crux of it. She might be seeing a lot of 15% or sub 15% tips in the future if those people were unhappy so she best enjoy that windfall. And the restaurant realized that would be horrible for business. Yelpers would be all over it. Our server was terrible, we waited 25 minutes for drinks, one of our dinners came out much later than everyone else's etc. If you are a server you really want to maintain a good relationship with the rest of the team. She'd learn that with or without the restaurant stepping in.

Customers really only see or think about what or who is in front of them.

Maybe but her life would probably have become difficult and the restaurant would have suffered.
