It probably isn't exact, but it does have some overlap with Plato's allegory of the cave.

Plato’s "Allegory of the Cave" is a concept devised by the philosopher to ruminate on the nature of belief versus knowledge. The allegory states that there exists prisoners chained together in a cave. Behind the prisoners is a fire, and between the fire and the prisoners are people carrying puppets or other objects. This casts a shadow on the other side of the wall. The prisoners watch these shadows, believing them to be real.

Plato posits that one prisoner could become free. He finally sees the fire and realizes the shadows are fake. This prisoner could escape from the cave and discover there is a whole new world outside that they were previously unaware of.

This prisoner would believe the outside world is so much more real than that in the cave. He would try to return to free the other prisoners. Upon his return, he is blinded because his eyes are not accustomed to actual sunlight. The chained prisoners would see this blindness and believe they will be harmed if they try to leave the cave.

Humanity is plugged in to our culture, our "machines" if you will. When you free yourself and escape the cave, you are blinded, just like Neo. When Neo is returned, the Oracle represents humanity and rather than getting humans to leave the cave, or in this case be disconnected from the machines, she agrees to continue living in peace.

Also the Wachowskis intended Neo to represent their transition from man to woman.

This new trailer gives away a lot, but I’m sure it’s barely scratching the surface.

Its good.

Not as good as the original, easily better than the sequels.

I’m surprised you’ve even heard of the original by now

I enjoyed it. It'll be interesting to see if this is a one-off or if they do more movies.

should I rewatch the other movies to catch up or can you get by having seen the first one several times many years ago and the other 2 once each when they came out?

You're fine. I saw the original last year but havent seen the sequels in like 15 years, and think i still caught most of the easter eggs or whatever theyre called.

Depends on if it makes money. After Spiderman, I wonder if the decision to release on HBO Max is regrettable.

i thought it was all part of the deal warner bros. had with hbo. any movie released by that studio goes both into theaters and hbo max. i don't know how long that's going to be though.

I had read that the deal was for 2021 only. Not sure if leaving Matrix in made the deal, but could have easily waited to release it in early 2022. Maybe it's not comic book enough to worry about though.

releasing it during the holiday season is still healthy for theaters, so that's probably why they went ahead with the late 2021 release. it won't make spider-man money probably but it should do fine.

It had about the same ratio of story to action as the first one, which is a good thing. But, it really relied heavily on the first one, to the point that it used substantial amounts of footage from the first one. Also, would it have killed them to get Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving? Their replacements were nowhere near as good.

I'd give it about 2.5 stars. There were enough interesting story elements to make it worth seeing, but it's closer in quality to the sequels than it is to the original.
