Thermostat question for the bored (or Darko specifically, but I don’t want to ask for too much free advice so this is me pretending I’m not doing that)…

I have two systems, but the thermostats are close enough together that it seems the one is impacting the other. Specifically, the unit that services the upstairs of my house seems to hit temperature without adequately heating most of the rooms. Not a huge deal in the summer, but not enjoyable when temps hit 0.

Anybody ever dealt with that? I’m wondering if relocating the thermostat would be a solution, or if that’d create some other problem I’m not expecting (i.e., heat running non-stop). Or if there’s some other less involved way to solve this.

Moving a thermostat isn't as easy as it sounds. You have to pull new wire to the new location.
That being said, there's thermostats out there with a remote sensor such as the ecobee. Should you get one of those, you can out the sensor wherever you like as it's rf controlled and not hard wired, and run off that instead of the thermostat itself.

I think that surprisingly Darkside will be proven to be right about the smart thermostat with the sensors in other rooms. It will take a lot of tweaking though to get the balance correct. It sounds like the room with the thermostat that heats/cools the rest of the house will always be very hot in order to keep the other rooms clear. I would almost think you would have to seal off some of the vents in the room with the thermostat for it to work as you want.

I recommend the ecobee because I have one and it solved a very similar problem in my house. I don't know that T9, never used it. The remote sensor in our cases is useless if you cannot have the system ignore the main thermostat which the ecobee allows you to do. In essence, the only thing controlling the temp at my house is a remote sensor. The thermostat itself is out of the equation.

If you have floor vents upstairs you can buy powered vent covers which automatically draw heated (or cooled) air into the room. They are an easy way to help balance temps between floors.

Depending on how old the system is, there may be manual tempering dampers to force more cool air upstairs in the summer, mine are buried above a drop ceiling in a basement bedroom, and never get adjusted.

I often found the complaining offspring had moved their furniture around and blocked either the return vent or the supply grating; with a closed door, they were occupying a stagnant air space.

Instead I took out the spinning thing (a you tube video showed how) and cleaned out all the gunk and broken glass. Doing that saved the trouble and expense of buying a new one. Even now it CLEANS.JUST.FINE.

YouTube really is a fantastic resource for home repairs - particularly appliances. Our gas oven wasn’t heating properly and I was thinking we’d need to replace it. After doing some research (YouTube) it became apparent that the igniter need to be replaced. Fortunately we had a parts store nearby and 2 hours later we were back in business.

If you have a little knowledge and skill there is a service manual inside the covers of the unit. You can run a diagnostics on most appliances and the machine itself will tell you what’s wrong.

YouTube really is a fantastic resource for home repairs - particularly appliances. Our gas oven wasn’t heating properly and I was thinking we’d need to replace it. After doing some research (YouTube) it became apparent that the igniter need to be replaced. Fortunately we had a parts store nearby and 2 hours later we were back in business.

Same here. Biggest issue which really is nothing is finding where to buy/order the $2 part

Yep. I could have gotten it cheaper on Amazon but then the oven would have been out of commission until the part s showed up (through Christmas) and you have to be certain that the part you order is a suitable replacement. It was easier in this case just to bite the bullet and get the factory part from a retailer who could look directly at what I had and assure me it was correct.
