This is the kind of story that pushed me to get my colonoscopy done at 45 this year. Glad I did too, as they removed three pre cancerous polyps. If you are on the fence about getting one, just do it.

Yes, please do it. I had symptoms of hemorrhoids/polyps at 27 and had 3 abnormally huge polyps (non cancerous) removed. Routine colonoscopy 2.5 years later (this past summer) — 1 tiny polyp removed. It runs in the family, but regardless, more younger people are being diagnosed and doctors don’t know why. This news absolutely stinks.

i always liked JD--that's such sad news, especially coming off the heels of losing his wife. and i do totally feel for that child.

i'm getting to colonoscopy age. i will not hesitate to go...even with the prep stories.

I met him very briefly once at one of those golf outings.

He seemed very normal and gracious. He had his UofI golf shirt on so we bonded for a moment.

Horrible story. I hope he can beat the odds.

My aunt beat cancer for a very long time. Longer than expected. Every day counts when you find yourself there - especially with kids.

I couldn't agree more with the thoughts in this thread...a very nice, extremely competent reporter...a terrible lot for just one family...and yes, get a fucking colonoscopy :x

Wow. This sucks. I feel so bad for him.

Yes, though I've never met JD, he always has struck me as a guy that all parents would want their daughter to marry. He's not one to do crude jokes or take fun cheap shots. He's not like us or most sports radio guys. He's an old fashioned type of guy. Reminds me of Wally Cleaver. I've said this on this board before. Just seems very nice, polite and proper.

How many kids does he have?

I interned at ESPN 1000 in the early 2000’s. Jeff was one of the nicest people you could imagine at the station. Silvy (asshole) one day ordered me to get him food for a show I didn’t work on. Jeff said no, don’t do that. I’ll take care of it. Just the nicest person you can imagine in an industry full of fake nice people. My prayers are with him and his kid.

The worst colonoscopy story is still probably better than the best cancer survivors story in terms of what they had to go through.

Sending good vibes to JD and his family.

I don't see the issue with a colonoscopy. I know the idea of it scares people.

But you basically take a nap and wake up and never know the difference.

Quite frankly, I needed the rest.

A prostate exam is much more concerning.

All that is well and good but Dickerson is a young man. Early 40's. Doctors aren't normally writing prescriptions for colonoscopies to men his age.

This is horrible news - liver cancer is essentially a death sentence.

I have history of cancer in my family. My father lost his eye to cancer at 38; died of liver cancer at 45. His mother died of colon cancer at 62. And me - think I would have been smarter and taken the right precautions?

Nope! I waited until 57 to get a colonoscopy. Of course they discovered cancer - and got lucky as all I needed was surgery ( they took eight to ten inches from my colon) but could have been avoided if I had a colonoscopy at 50 - and should have been earlier with my history.

So - know you family history - and if your doctor won't let you have a colonoscopy earlier than 50, find another doctor.

I hope it continues to work out for you with your cancer.

This could have been worded better. I dunno, maybe it's fine. Light it up Chicago. Truly empathetic or "Cancer. Something to fuck around with on your downtime."

One of my cousins got hit with ovarian/colon/liver stage 4 about 18 years ago, had surgery on December 23 that year. Christmas Day at the Rush ICU was something else.
She's still with us, but it was a long slog for her and the various chemo has done a number on her even over a decade later.

But she's been with us all along. She hosted Thanksgiving again this year after everybody stayed home in 2020.

Hoping good things for JD.

I hope he has family helping him. Cuz he has to worry about surviving and his kid or kids. How many does he have?

Then he has to worry about somebody taking the kids if he dies. Taking care of that while battling this. That is horrible stress when your wife has died and you have nobody to ease the concern of all of it. And it's not like he's a millionaire. He's just a Bears reporter. So money is a problem.

I feel so bad for him.

Kind of puts things in perspective. Not that I needed it. JD is going through this. Julie DiCaro is crying about some unknown guy calling her fat on twitter. And how that's a world problem.

Awful. Sounds like he at least got to spend some time this past year with his son and his son's activities. Too bad there weren't more times like that for them both these past few years with things being locked down or in the future.
