No one is less handy than I.

Which reminds me, I went to school with a guy named Less Handy. Knew him from shop class....

When our dishes started coming out dirty, I found the plastic had deteriorated on both spinning elements. Instead of coming out 50 tiny holes at high pressure towards the dishes, it was gushing out the end of the element, basically washing the walls of the dishwasher.

Got one new one and one used one, and it worked good as new for about $45. appliancepartspros.com has repair videos.

Just replaced the silverware basket last week.

Look, here's the deal. I'm responsible for more revenue at my company than any other technician. But I get shit from my boss all the time because I refuse to sell certain high percentage product like for example these air scrubbers. And I don't ever upsell at maintenance calls unless it's necessary or something that benefits the customer. I do sell more replacement furnaces and boilers than anyone se does but that's because I am significantly more thorough than anyone else is at my calls. If I end up at your house I'm checking deep into the system. And maybe you'll get some news you don't want. But what you won't have is a 600 repair bill this year and a 1200 repair bill the next year then the 3500 replacement bill costing you 5300 instead of the 3500 it should have been.
I put this shit into my house first. A couple years ago I recommended an ecobee thermostat to a friend/board member when i diagnosed their issue being the thermostat. He had a carrier infinity thermostat. That fucker is 800 bucks. The ecobee I think I put in for him for less than 300. And it's a better stat, I know this because it's the last of 5 or 6 thermostat I tested in my house. I won't test any more because this thing is great and I love it and I don't want another one anymore.
So when I say that these things are expensive trash understand that I know how this works. The tech who sells it to you gets 50 to 100 bucks commission. The sales manager or service manager gets a commission too. Then there's the company profit. And aerus profit. And for what so you can breathe h2o2 and o3 and bleach your upholstery? Get a fresh smell (ozone) and get otherwise zero benefit except for profit to a tech and sales manager?
It's a garbage technology and I'll never endorse it.

This Carrier Infinity?

Would any Ecobee work as a replacement, or is there a particular model? I have read conflicting info on this. And assuming an Ecobee would work would I be able to do it myself or would I have to pay a pro? I can turn a screw driver and follow clear instructions. But troubleshooting (i.e. if something expected is missing or something is there that shouldn't be -- not so much. Asking for a friend.

Yeah you can put an ecobee in instead of the infinity thermostat. You'll lose some functions of a communicating thermostat like running different speeds on the fan but that's about it. You'll have to change the way the wiring is done at the furnace. The infinity has 4 wires wired to A, B, C, and D terminals and the new thermostat wires into traditional RWGYC terminals. It's easier than it sounds.

This is good info. I have an old barn that we converted to living space and it’s where I watch sports, do a touch of reloading and post on this board. Where the thermostat is seems to cause a thermal bridge problem when the wind comes out of east so I think a thermostat with a a remote sensor might be a better option. Is there one to avoid or one to seek out?

Ecobee dude. The 4 and 5 model comes with a remote sensor that can be set up to be the only thing the thermostat uses to run, so it can completely ignore the thermostats input.

I’ll look into it. Middle of winter if it’s super cold and we get on the backside of a front the damn thermostat thinks it’s 62 in the building when it is 78. If I’m smart I just turn th heat way down but I’m kind of an idiot so I forget and end up burning a ton of propane.

This solves that problem. Essentially allows you to place the thermostat anywhere you want.

Thanks. The furnace is a Carrier too. Will the right wires be there already on both sides (T-stat and furnace side) or will they need to be pulled? Which may be beyond me. And if they are there will I be able to figure out how to "..change the way the wiring is done at the furnace?"

I'll look for a you tube video but I would be grateful if you have one you could point me to. Thanks,

If you want to run a humidifier from the ecobee you'll need a 6 wire. If you just run the heat and cooling 4 wire is sufficient as it comes with an adapter for the common 4 wire you find in most houses.
The wiring change is pretty easy. A typical infinity has 4 wires at a molex connection on the board, a b c and d. They also have the standard r w y g and c terminals. Essentially you wire up the terminals rather than the molex. Ecobee comes with detailed instructions and their tech support is second to none.

How much should an emergency call and new motor or blower or something for a furnace cost?

Emergency call 125 give or take.
Standard PSC blower motor 500-900 depending on make.
Variable motor 900-1400 depending on make

Availability is a bitch.

Is this less than hypothetical?

No. Just was wondering if we were getting hosed but prices are in line, except the call was $200.

Jesus. 200? That's as steep as I've ever heard. Heat back on?

Funny story, I worked 7am yesterday until about 1230a this morning more or less straight thru. Wife wakes me up at 5am, furnace was making a grinding noise. Inducer quit. Ordered it from the supply house and it wasn't available until 3pm today. Didn't get home til 6, replaced the motor and had the heat on by 615. House was at 52 degrees. Just got up to 68 in the last half hour.

What a couple days.

Were you implying that she could have used it as a source for heat for the overnight hours or what exactly were you saying?

I've got one for you. I think it technically falls under the plumbing scope of work but it involves venting so I am sure you would know the answer. I have to change my water heater from a traditional unit to a power vent. I would like to put it by my other water shit on the outside wall of the basement. The specs I am looking at say I need a minimum of 7 feet of venting pipe. Am I reading that wrong. I swear I have seen these things installed on the outside wall with the pvc popped out the skirt just like the furnace intake/outtake. That would be like 30 inches at most.

Yeah I've seen that a lot too. Will it work? Probably. Should it be done according to the manual? Yes. Can you run it a few feet along that outside wall to another exit point?

Is there a 90° elbow involved? One of those = 5' equivalent length of straight pipe (not literally but in terms of calculations).

I could probably run it a bit before it exits but I will have to look at the specs again as that 90 degree turn Zippy mentioned was in the document IIRC. That sounds right that a 90 is equal to 5 feet and it is over 2 feet from the unit to outside at least.
