I spent 20 years getting away from farming.

Nothing but the utmost respect but I know my limits.

No way I’d retire to farming.

I can see hobby farming but to survive nope.

Isn’t that just serious gardening?

Yeah I was probably more thinking ranching. Couple cows or horses.

My stepson's dad has a hobby farm and they have 5 acres. They grow something on it to feed their livestock. I think in their mind they are going to be some big Black Angus operation but
from what I can see it is a big expensive hobby and I would be surprised if they make anything at all on it. Also seems like a lot of work with those animals. Once the boy goes to school in about
a month I have no idea how they are going to be able to take care of everything. They have like a 12 yr old girl but I don't think she can carry the weight.

My farming is far more expensive and painful than a hobby, so I refer to it as Fetish Farming. And I dress like a host of the AVN awards show most days, so there is that.

maybe you can announce the NBA finals

my dad told me 5 years ago that he'll never be able to retire. he showed me his retirement account and i was like well you better chuck it away and plan on working part time (in truth my mom will likely not stop because she loves what she does) but my dad is getting crotchety a little bit and doesn't like some of the things going on at work. 2 years ago i sat with him and my mom with their advisor and he was like here is this and then whipped out a statement from the OTHER HALF of their retirement at franklin templeton. My mom is completely aware, my dad had no idea. Advisor is like, well looks like you guys are a few years from your goals. my dad is like what. now he's really ready. he'll continue to do side gigs as he's pretty coveted for those.

i'm in my early 40's and outside of directing investments, i don't really think or care about it much. i'm a 9-5 office guy but am handy enough to get myself into trouble with the best of them. I imagine when i hang it up, i'll consult, help family with finances if needed, and do a lot of volunteer work.

I could afford to retire today but since I cannot run for 18 hours I don't know what else I would do all day.

Plus those in my circle who have already retired are not making very good cases for it. Seems all they do is bicker with their wives. So I suppose I will keep working until either my boss or my health makes the decision for me.

I'm still 20+ years from even thinking about retirement since we have 2 kids under 5 and want to get them through college first. We've been investing of course and have no debt outside of our mortgage. I like where we are right now for entering our mid 30s. We got rid of our student debt a few years ago and even though we could pay more on our home, we won't do that as my ROI on an investment is significantly higher than the interest I pay on our mortgage, which we did refinance. Even when the kids are out of the house, I don't see myself wanting to retire before 60.

My Dad retired today after working the last 37 years for the same publicly traded company. I amazed at the fact he both never left nor was let go in the never ending stream of cost cutting and layoffs.

Retirement for me is for giving back. Try it. It's sensational.

It's a serious question, not serious, but real question. How do you know when you are done? I mean you can always make more money to give to your children when you are gone. How do you make that decision?

I guess I just always assumed I'd work until I die. But, I don't think I would have to. Seems selfish not to, though.

I am working 12 more years and then I am retiring regardless of any changes to my retirement plan or health insurance issues. I invest the maximum amount possible every year plus I have other investments so unless there are major unforeseen changes, my retirement years will be golden. I am not worried about leaving money for my children since they will already receive substantially more that what my parents will leave me. I'm not truly living the life I desire but I am so locked in with my family and career that it would be incredibly selfish to make any major lifestyle changes. lol- that sounds depressing when I read it but overall my life is good but not great. But when I retire I figure I can have a good 15+ years of living exactly how I want. Meh- probably get cancer or something and ruin those plans.
