It's hard to get excited over a Netflix produced movie. They produce so much garbage I wish they would just stop.

Pretty pretty good social satire on the current state of America

Didn't the movie propose that the scientific establishment never lies? That Elon Musk is retarded? That the corporate media isn't purposely bad, just flippant? That skateboarders are deep?

I’m torn. The movie intrigued me on the previews.

But I saw back to back Tweets where Grid said it was shit and Ugie said it was great.

Ugie and I have a history on movie reviews. Not sure what to do.

Dicaprio is in a zone. He's just absolutely awesome. Movie is shit, he's great.

I’ll put it like this.

MANY on this board won’t like it.

Keep in mind, MANY on this board don’t like much of anything.

I don’t think it’s the perfect movie, but it’s worthy commentary on the current American Zeitgeist.

Saw it yesterday. Not a great movie but a pretty solid dark comedy. Enjoyed it

I'm going to try to watch it this weekend once my wife's family finally leaves. I find it interesting that it is so polarizing as far as the love and dislike for it

It's funny, but it's definitely propaganda.

It's not though.
It satirizes the celebrity obsession with celebrity. And America's fascination with out Twitter follows and likes. It's got something to say about science denial and science worship. It addresses technology worship and the weirdos behind the latest and greatest goofy gadgets to grab your time from your life and family.
Amazing this was written before Covid because Mindy could easily be Fauci. Originally this was to have been kind of a riff on global warming but it really echos our reactions to covid very well, as both issues are highly politicized, polarized, and paralyzed by the belligerent on each side.
It's worth a view. It's actually pretty funny in lots of places.

And when the table starts shaking, and things are very real, it has a heartwarming moment or two.

I liked the movie, but it's clearly climate change propaganda. David Sirota is obsessed with "climate change."

And let me make clear that I'm not "denying" climate change or making any representations about the possible anthropogenic nature of such. But our disastrous COVID response should make anyone wary of becoming obsessed with a single issue and those who declare ambiguous problems "existential threats."

That sums it up pretty well Darko.

I’m well aware of Adam McKay’s TDS and Sirota’s political leanings (MANY of which I agree with), but I was able to really enjoy this movie without feeling like it was pulling me way too far left.

The critiques on journalism, celebrities, and tech billionaire influence on policy aren’t really partisan views.

Like DS said before, Mindy has some parallels to Fauci in the sense of how new found celebrity can corrupt science.

I feel like you made up your mind when you saw the talent without trying to be as objective as possible.

I say all this admitting the movie can most definitely be viewed as an allegory for climate change, and this hopeless country’s reaction to it.

McKay flat-out said it was about climate change.

Ariana Grande has to have zero self awareness to have taken that role. Her role is a commentary about her real life existence but seemingly without her knowing either aspects. Brilliant casting.

The movie was pretty average even for satire. The story itself was bad. It was more like chapters of a book than a full story.

I don't see how one could have missed that, which is why it wasn't brilliant satire. The best satire lures you in, laughing at the absurdity until you finally reach an epiphany well into the story that you are laughing at yourself.

Well then I agree where the plot went. There's 0% chance of stopping the damage of co2 buildup.(81% in the movie). So it is definitely adaptation and/or technology, like in the movie, that could mitigate the damage. Movie Musk tried. Oh well.

Also, it's pretty clear that whenever someone in power cites something as an "existential threat" that must immediately be addressed, their prescription for addressing it unfailingly grants them more power.

If that movie were real life, I would have more faith in the Elon Musk character taking care of the comet than I would in Meryl DRUMPF's government working in concert with dopey academics like Pothead Kate and Lecherous Leo.

In real life, NASA has more confidence in Musk than NASA has in NASA.

Correct

But there are other plot points that are humorous.

I'll grant that. But they were minor.

The only barely touched the surface of the corporate press. The frivolousness is like 5% of what's wrong with journalism.

They were dead on with social media and celebrity.

I appreciate that the vapidity of Michael Strahan's existence was highlighted and it was layered when played by a closeted actor.

I didn't take the tech guy as purely Musk. I think it was an amalgamation and it is interesting to think at least a couple, and maybe more, of our tech giants are run by people on the spectrum who may be looking at civilization differently

Zuck, Bezos, Musk, Gates, and heavy Tim Cook vibes Mark Rylance’s appearance.

there were definitely things to like about the film. the cast is great, they wanted to be in it, they certainly had fun with it. there are some big laughs in it for sure.

but it drags on way too long, including having a mid-credits *and* post-credits scene (thankfully unlike seeing it in a theater, you can fast forward to these scenes). one is ridiculous and its payoff from an earlier joke is only mildly amusing. the second one is a complete waste of time. and this also touches on something that's driven me away from the marvel universe: setting a precedent that there always must be not only a post-credits scene but a mid-credits scene. so that now we're programmed to expect these things. when you go back to really judge the importance of these scenes, you realize most of them are a waste of time. you can eliminate them and still understand the next movie you see. unless you have a really short attention span and have short-term memory loss.

but back to "don't look up".

there are some obvious issues with the premise: first, it's not credible to me that people wouldn't take an asteroid hitting the earth seriously. we've had a few events in the past 10 years (including the end of the mayan calendar) that proved we collectively would be willing to do whatever we could to stop an apocalypse. using this as a thinly veiled allegory of climate change is disingenuous. and besides that, the movie pounds you over and over again with its sermon by showing countless shots of nature juxtaposed with shots of destruction or aloofness to the inevitable destruction of the planet. quick shots, too. you barely have time to really take in and reflect before you're pummeled with more visual commentary.

but even when the film is mocking celebrity, it still manages to give arianna grande an entire 8-minute segment to show off her "song" so that i'm assuming this will be released as a major single. in a film that's supposed to be self-aware, as GD pointed out about grande above, there seems to be a complete whoosh on how that joke should land. grande sucks as an actress to begin with (going back to "victorious", probably the most obnoxious acting you'll see). it isn't funny or successful satire when you're openly advertising the person you're supposed to be mocking.

and if you're going to get tough with your satire, go for broke. don't have light-hearted or heartwarming moments mucking up your message. was anyone shedding any tears for general ripper in "dr. strangelove"? put that movie up against this, and it's not even close to how sharp satire used to be compared to today.

that movie had a singular purpose, and it also had a hopeless ending. it also lands every punch, while this movie languishes in contradictory messages and leans on star power to carry its muddled message.

the criticisms of this film are not all coming from the people that would have been depicted as the "don't look up" brigade in the film (another too on-the-nose joke that is more ridiculous than it is funny). there was an article i read from MSNBC that does a very good job of breaking down the film and pointing out its weaknesses while still giving the film credit where it's due.

overstuffed, underdeveloped and punches at easy targets too often. it's a shame, but as we live in a culture that's more inclined to "spike the football" than actually take a hard, reflective look at ourselves, this is the only kind of social commentary we get now.

:D :D out of :D :D :D :D

I completely agreed. My wife and I loved it. You're right in that many people on this board will not like it since the movie disproportionately mocks the right and the 'Merica they love so much.
