There was a time when Bernstein was my favorite host. I have no use for him now.

Spiegel is a petty, small (metaphorically) man. He’s the weak link.

I think he’s a capable radio host for things that are strictly expository but he’s got something approximating zero entertainment value.

Fat fingers.

I may as well leave it now.

Someone like Bernstein worked when he was trying to be entertaining. I don't think he has honestly tried to be that in 11 years now.

With the attention he received for the Penn St. coverage, he got a big head and started everything too seriously. He obviously had goals of becoming a national host then. He turned off a significant portion of his audience with his new approach and never got them back. He painted himself way too much into a corner with his SJW approach and now comes off as an unfunny, bitter liberal. He ruined WYC with the political content and instead of having good-natured ribbing with callers, he chose to insult them instead.

That's Parkinson?

Jesus Christ, he's the most insipid host on the Score, ever. Worse than Larry. He's a big part of the reason why no one listens. He doesn't even "talk sports" for several hours a day.

If that was really him, what an un-self-aware clown.

Thomas, I expect better out of you. This is a terrible take.

Parkins has done a solid job with the afternoon show. He has done something that I once thought impossible. He has helped make meatpants a valueable part of a show. I have been one of the biggest critics of meatpants over the years, but he has found his niche here with this show. No doubt Shane and Tanney help make that possible. They all do a solid job of talking sports and providing entertainment. They do not take themselves super serious and they seek to have a fun show. The Wanny segment is the perfect example of what their show is. They give some good NFL/Bears stuff every week, but they also put that with a lot of fun and laughs.

So to say that Parkins is worse that Larry is just wrong, dead wrong.

Insulting a bunch of callers was entertaining when most of the callers were in on it.

Exactly. Problem became when he started looking down on his audience.

Spiegal was good on the Saturday morning show with Levine. Levine kept him in check and made him concentrate on the topic. It was a good show.

have not heard him at all w/ Parkins this time around. I do remember when they were originally paired up Spiegal was very jealous of Parkins and treated him unfairly on air. I guess they have patched things up 2nd time around now....

Have not really heard parkins much other than a few times when he was with Danny mac.

But if I do tune in and these guys are talking politics or social discussion other than sports, then I turn it off or go to AM 1000 - that station actually talks about sports. I don't care what side of the political debate someone on the score is on - the entire point is it's a sports talk radio station - not Rush Limbaugh or CNN. Sports is an escape, sports radio is an extension of that escape - so if they're talking politics Im not listening.

As for gambling shows - if this is becoming a big part of AM radio around the country - then why not bring Mike North back locally in Chicago? North is great doing sports gambling shows.

North is on ESPN 1000, usually with Carmen.

I think I saw that on one of the podcasts but is he on only once a week or for a segment a day?

I've never heard any of these new sports radio gambling shows - I have to ask how do those work? I mean wouldn't they run out of odds to talk about after an hour or two?

Agreed. I enjoy the good natured ballbusting that fuels much of the show. It's the rare Score show that's actually fun to listen to.

Nas and TM obviously lost a few bets to Danny Boy.....

Anything good on that show comes from Spiegs. Think about that. (Actually, I've always liked Spiegs.)

Me too. I actually used to call into his national show back in the day. He is one of the more well rounded sports hosts that the score has ever had. Really Really good on Baseball and his basketball knowledge used to be pretty solid too. I haven't caught him years as I just don't listen to sportstalk radio anymore.

I remember first listening to sports talk when sleeping over at friend's house in NY, while at an away game for rugby at Fordham. I was immediately hooked.

I was abroad when the Score started and didn't know it existed when I returned until about July or so of its initial year. Chicago was an incredibly tough market for entertaining talk back then as they were competing with shows like Stern, Brandmeier, Dahl and Matthews. Still, the Score was able to carve out a place for my listenership. They never could seem to get mornings correct for what seemed like the first decade. However, once the Monsters and HFC found there voice, the Score was as good of listening irrespective of category as there was in this city. It really had a great balance of sports nerding and entertainment and the hosts styles were diverse.

I was in school during those days so I had the ability to listen at times during middays. I don't have the same freedom now. I listen on the ride in and the ride home. Unlike many, I think Mully has a perfect tone for sports talk in the morning. No frills. Packed with information and indulges venting from the night before when appropriate. I also like Parkins and Speigal.

The lineup is good because the people I don't want to listen to are on at the times I cannot listen.

I would say the very big difference between now and the golden era is that, while I may enjoy the show, I just don't find it as compelling of a listen as back in the day. Anecdotally, I showed up late for class on the day they flipped to 670, just so I could listen. The current hosts haven't instilled that kind of brand loyalty in me and I don't think I'm alone. Remotes were events back in the day because of the loyalty of the listeners. Just as with Stern in his prime, you could strike up a conversation with someone about "did you hear what North said yesterday?"

As a criticism, Danny, if you aren't a winning gambler, I don't want to hear gambling talk. Why would I want to hear the thoughts of a guy who is going to lose me money? The only way that is fun is if you are a true degenerate and are willing to tell the horror stories of your losses.

I think they became extremely vanilla once they decided to go corporate. That was one of the more discernible differences that I noticed. They still maintained a number of the original hosts, but it seemed that there was a great deal more hand slapping going on as a result. The hosts had to dial back a lot of the sophomoric behavior that had become a staple of the earlier years. And when they were replaced often times it would be with guys that were extremely milquetoast by comparison.

The only time I have ever found gambling talk interesting was when VSIN before it got sold was on XM204 for a while and Brent Musburger would host a 2-hour show from the South Point casino leading into the east coast evening games. But that's because Brent is a character, and he had some characters on each day. I've maybe bet $200 on sports lines and another $200 on daily fantasy on Fan Duel in my entire life, so I'm obviously not the target demographic.

The two biggest character changers at the station are corporatization and broadcasting games. In reality, those are the same thing.

How many people have we heard detail that the Cubs, Blackhawks, etc. have censored host content? That should be an embarrassing admission for anyone with integrity.

Having team partnerships really changed the nature of the station. I can't even imagine how Murph would have been able to do his Cubs post-game shows, which were like a Cubs version of Buffone and OB after a Bears game.

How long would this current Score last if they were on 30 years ago? Bland cookie cutter hosts, mandated liberal agenda, strong affiliated team influence on opinions, disproportionate demographic representation of Jewish hosts, contradictory opinions unwelcome.

Andy McPhail. FAIL! The Score definitely would have made him pump the brakes on that or be fired for failing to do so.

Spiegel is a petty, small (metaphorically) man. He’s the weak link.

I think he’s a capable radio host for things that are strictly expository but he’s got something approximating zero entertainment value.

When he was taking time off to rest his voice for his over-glorified cover band...that explains everything you need to know about him. He's a diva who tries to come off as a compassionate everyman.

The complaints about too many Jewish hosts are a dead giveaway that he's bigfan.

He hated sports so much he started this message board.

not day 1, but summer of 92 for sure.

I started in mid-'93 when I moved back to the area.

Was still around when they went off the air at 4:30pm or whenever the sun went down, whatever that was. I guess it was a fed regulation thing on the signal.

When I was a kid I could listen to KMOX at night and a station out of Dallas that used to broadcast Rangers games. I'd listen to that at night as I went to sleep.

I think the Texas station was on the same frequency, Kenneth.
