I’d have guessed dead. Next you’re going to tell me Regis is no longer with us.

I found Guess Who's Coming To Dinner a very interesting time capsule of a movie.

I'd always heard it was a groundbreaking film growing up and finally watched it 30 years ago or so. I don't argue it wasn't groundbreaking. I'm sure it was at that time, clearly. We're still talking about it.

But the man literally had to be a Nobel Prize-winning doctor curing diseases in impoverished countries and, EVEN THEN, there was conflict about it from the liberal white parents.

There are some fantastic individual scenes though with some real acting.

And then there's the milk delivery that dances like a male pixie with his female pixie into the house as he drops off the dairy.

It's a movie with a lot of changes in tone.

It's hard not to get emotional about the last scene with Spencer Tracy. He was barely alive at that point. Could barely do the scene and he wasn't acting. He was talking to Katharine Hepburn directly. I think he died a couple of weeks later.

I enjoy the movie quite a bit. But it's insane.

Yeah, but he also voiced a cartoon baboon so that undid all of the good work.

I'm not a movie person, but Poitier was great as Walter Lee, one of my favorite characters of all time, in A Raisin in the Sun.

fairly good in his first big role, as a black doctor dealing with overt racism in 'no way out'. richard widmark played the hateful character and the sultry linda darnell was eventually won over by the good side.

that's my favorite poitier movie, not role.

rip

Factoid 1: Quincy Jones wrote and performed the the theme song for Sanford and Son.
Factoid 2: Redd Foxx's real name was John Sanford and his father's name was Fred Sanford.

He also went to grade school or something with Harold Washington.

Yeah I remember reading that in Malcolm X's book.

Probably DuSable, that and Wendell Phillips were our only two main choices back then.
