Premise: Bears don't like big personalities and/or people who are secure enough to tell you you're wrong, that rules out experienced GMs and coaches

Premise: Experienced GMs/coaches are aware of how incompetent the Bears are, so they'll shy away from the roles unless they are assured of things the Bears will never concede, such as removing Phillips from the room

Conclusion: As a result, only candidates who've never been GMs or HCs before will accept these roles with the Bears. That is because the promotion and status change outweighs the perils of working for an incompetent org. This happened in 1999 (Jauron), 2000 (Angelo), 2003 (Lovie), 2012 (Emery), 2013 (Trestman), 2017 (Pace), and 2018 (Nagy). Only John Fox slipped through as an experienced candidate who accepted the job but probably realized quickly that he shouldn't have.

Feel free to place bets

I expect they’ll get a couple guys I’ve never heard of. Everybody will love them and pretend they have deep insight into how they’ll perform their respective roles.

Four to seven years from now we’ll be having the same conversation.

They would be smart to lure and pay Will McClay out of Dallas to be the GM.

1/2 so far. Guess they'll go experienced with a coach just like they did with Pace and Fox. It worked out well so makes sense.

Yep

They can't hire a strong personality like Flores now. He'd run right over the new GM. They could pair him with a calmer experienced type like Caldwell or Frazier though.

it is uncommon to see a GM get a second shot... usually that only happens to the successful ones (like pollian). HC choice is another matter and there is a strong argument to be made a coach on try #2 is a desirable asset

Rick has told you a few times almost every GM across the league is a rookie GM.

Sorry that you’re bummed out they didn’t hire Leslie Frazier or Jim Caldwell.

Of the current GMs in the NFL, which ones aren't "rookies"?

Jerry Jones was a rookie GM. So was Belichick. Don Shula...

I'm fine with it. Would've preferred Quinn of the final three, but glad they didn't go with a super old guy.

To all of you:

The only model that would have demonstrated the team is serious about winning would be to make Pederson, Harbaugh or Payton HC/GM.

Pedersen was the only guy available. I liked him, but apparently the rest of the league knows something that I don't.

Harbaugh and Payton weren’t available. You’re getting close to “dey shoulda traded for belichick” meatballery

Not meatballery. Rick's point on GMs is fine.

What they did this week is just rearrange chairs on the titanic.

Doug Pederson would have been a good choice as coach, but what has he done to merit full control of football operations?

And making Pederson the GM/coach would have been the equivalent of loading people onto the Hindenburg.

Well if Rick's point is "fine," then that would make your point wrong.

None of us know if these guys are good or bad. They do have more experience than the last guys.

I don't think Pederson is seeking GM control but clearly would have been a better pick than EberLose.

He certainly would appear to have a higher floor. I would have also preferred that the Bears hire a coach with an offensive background.

Pederson fell apart without Reich. Im not sure he would have been a better choice than Eberfluse.

Pace and Nagy sucked and everyone wanted both gone. They are and there’s two new guys and nobody here has a clue if they will be good or not. There werent really any slam dunk candidates this cycle. I dont really get the consternation

If you were a bear fan you would have no confidence in these morons, Im confident they fucked it up again..proven track record to base that on. The colts D kinda sucked, ive read alot about how happy Colts fans are this guy is gone and stunned how managed to fail upward. The GM? I dontvwant anybody from KC, the guy who drafted everybody worth a fuck is gone and Reid is the brains behind the operation.

If they’d have hired a guy like Rick Smith I wouldn’t care as much about the coach. The hiring of a mid-30s first timer with no real executive experience and the media blowies re: how much control he’ll have is history as a farce type shit.

Instead I just don’t care about anything now.

That the GM is from Kansas City says either it isn't his choice or that Bienemy isn't the candidate some hope he is.

The coach though, led a defense needing a win and got blown out by Jacksonville. Oof.

How good was Rick Smith? He ran an expansion franchise and didn’t really do anything special. John Dorsey was the only person who was somewhat available that had a great track record. Everyone else was a gamble.
