The cc companies make so much money its cheaper for them to refund anything suspicious rather than try to figure out why its suspect. They do a lot of automated verification on every transaction too. They know your habits and where you spend them, so anything out of ordinary is easy for them to spot.

I’m out zero dollars here so it’s really just spite if I try to pursue this thing.

My only lede is a reference number from Expedia but their customer service consists entirely of bots impersonating Indian call center employees.

Spite isn't the worst reason for doing something.

Yeah, usually it’s a $52 dollar dare.

We have a nephew who stole an uncle's credit card number and used it to buy a bunch of goofy stuff. They amicably worked it out pretty quickly. I don't know if I would have been so forgiving.

Update nobody cares to receive….

I’ve finally dug into this and the fraudster is not the guy I thought it was. Ironically, it looks to be a CPS teacher from his LinkedIn. Guy lives in my town - no idea how he got it, but he had my full cc details including address.

Fortunately he bought some stuff that had reference numbers so I was able to track down itineraries and confirmations. One nice lady was kind enough to give me the home address he provided at the time of booking a hotel.

So my question is…now what? This guy’s residence makes it a Glenview on Glenview crime - the worst type of crime imaginable- so conceivably I could take this to the locals. Is it worth doing?

I don't think it's a good plan to risk retribution from a criminal in your own town in order to avenge a crime against a credit card company that just writes it off like it never happened.

I was in South Dakota for a work meeting around 10 years ago staying this Mom and Pop hotel. When I was checking out, after I handed my American Express card to the clerk, he handed something to the guy standing next to me. Afterward, I suspect they were in on it together because the fraudulent American Express charges started in SD and went all the way across the country and ended up in Maryland. Gas stations, Fast Food, $200 at a CVS and a high end restaurant by the time that I caught it. I suspect that it was a guy or group of guys that were in SD for Pheasant hunting, because they were dressed for it. He probably slipped the clerk a $100 or so. They had to have a copy of my card in order to make the purchases that they did. It probably totaled over $1,000 easy by the time it was done. American Express didn't blink, they removed all the charges.

You should sleep with the guy's wife.

I don't really know the type of people to commit credit card fraud risking long term imprisonment for a few hundred dollars but I assume they would be the type to throw a rock through a car window after they get out of jail.

I thought that CPS teachers had to live in Chicago?

I thought all city employees had to live within city borders. I’m going off a linked in profile so who knows whether it’s current.
